FredEx Arrested

Why is it that every month or so I am doing some random post on former Eagle Freddie Mitchell, a legend in his own mind and his own mind alone? This time he failed to pay child support so he was locked up in jail. Poor First Down Freddie. CSN Philly's Leslie Gudel first broke this story through Twitter over the weekend and here is said tweet.

As if this story needed a kicker, he was scheduled to guest host a radio show this week in Philly. Well guess what, somehow, FredEx got out of jail and still ended up on the radio! Only Freddie Mitchell.

According to PhillyBlurbs, he was asked about the incident and he did have some comments on it.

Mitchell said on the radio that he didn't know about the warrant. On his non-payment of child support: "I don't condone not paying it, but they don't understand my situation, and it's still an ongoing trial." ..."When it comes to parenting and custody, they have all the rights. I'm sorry, but woman have the rights. If they want to do something on spite and not let you see your kids, they can do it. And that's what happened with me. I don't condone not paying child support, but I chose, 'Hey, I'm not going to pay.' "

Sometimes there is a part of me that wishes he never caught that 4th and 26 ball from McNabb. That guy is just flat out crazy and/or delusional. And yet, it's all oddly hilarous.

It was long since established in 1999 that the Colts made the right choice by picking Peyton Manning over Ryan Leaf, who was seen at the time of being someone that would have a very successful career in the NFL. But now, while Peyton Manning is a megastar and setting records for the Indianapolis Colts, Ryan Leaf will now experience life behind bars for indictments of drugs and burglary. From The Vancouver Sun:

The indictment charged the 33-year-old former San Diego Charger and former West Texas A&M quarterbacks coach with one count of burglary to a habitation, seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and delivery of a simulated controlled substance.

Leaf is suspected of breaking into an apartment and stealing the painkiller Hydrocodone, which had been prescribed to an injured football player.

Leaf has been undergoing drug rehabilitation in British Columbia, the Amarillo Globe-News reported. Efforts are under way to try to convince Leaf to return to the United States on his own.

And to think that I almost feel bad for the guy. The key word there, of course, is almost. The guy just seemed like he was nothing but an egotistical, d-bag both as a Charger, with other teams, and after he left the league. It is a curious thought of how the NFL would be different if the Colts had choosed Leaf over Manning and the Chargers then decided to pick Peyton Manning....

And just as a warning for the weekend, things the number of posting over here will probably be a bit on the light side because a). it is Memorial Day Weekend and I do have stuff to do and people to hang out with, and b). because I am the fill-in blogger over at Keith's Sports Journal for the weekend, so often times, when I do post, I'll be posting over there. We Now Return To Philadelphia's Favorite Soap Opera: As Andy Reid's Kids' World Turns

Not to diminish the societal importance and sadness of stuff like this, but this is about the most overhyped, overtalked about story in the Philadelphia media. It's the tragic story of Andy Reid and his kids and this little place called jail. Yep. We've got more news on the Reid kid front, if you will. Garrett Reid is going back to prison. Garrett had been staying in a halfway house, but just a little note to Garrett: if you want your life to improve, don't get into fights in said halfway house! Keith's Sports Journal has more.

We all know about the escapade's of the Reid boys. His son Britt Reid has also been charged with drug possession and with threatening another driver with a gun in a road rage incident. His other son Garrett Reid has a rap sheet longer than Mike Tyson's. Last May he pleaded guilty to smuggling drugs into his jail cell. And this was after he was arrested for an DUI. Well Garrett is back at it again.

Garrett Reid will be sent back to prison after he got into a fight at a halfway house. He has been staying at the halfway house as a court-ordered drug treatment.

When sentenced last year, the judge likened the Reid household to a "drug emporium".

We make fun of Andy Reid a lot, but this is some serious issues. Even a real nice guy like Tony Dungy lost his son to suicide. And Dungy is the last person in the world you would think, who would lose his son in such a matter.

Coaches in every sport work like machines. They work long hours with very few days off. You could see how their families would be neglected. I am not saying though this doesn't happened in houses where parents are with their children all the time. Because it does happen. And I am sure Andy and his wife have spent many sleepless nights worrying about their sons.

Garrett now finds himself in Gratersford Prison, which, believe me, is one of the worst prisons in the area. I know people who have visited clients in there so I have heard and learned all about Gratersford, and while Garrett Reid is not one (yet) that would be the jail you would go to if you committed murder in this area. And in a funny coincidence, the prison where he was kept before the Halfway House fight, Montgomery County Prison, is literally 5-minutes from my house (waits for people to Google Earth Montgomery County Prison and see the area where I live).

Sigh...let's hope that Andy Reid can sort out his personal matters, well, personally, and every other press conference question is not about Garrett like it was a few years ago. I do wish the best to Andy Reid and his family in dealing with these obviously tough times.

FredEx May Be FedExed To The Pokey

Thanks to 49er16 for the link on this one. I could bore you with my take on the Brett Favre retirement story (he's done for good, I think), but there is not anything that I can say that you can't get from watching 30 seconds of ESPN. Instead, here's an interesting little peace on Ex-Eagle Freddie Mitchell from Pro Football Talk. Apparently the Ex-Eagle may be spending some time in jail for possessing marijuana.

Former Eagles receiver Freddie Mitchell, a 2001 first-round pick whose career flamed out a few years back, could be spending a few years in prison.

He’s reportedly under investigation for accepting a package allegedly containing more than seven pounds of marijuana.

Mitchell reportedly was cuffed briefly but not arrested after signing for the package last week at his Lakeland, Florida restaurant.

This is officially less surprising than Brett Favre's second retirement. Freddie Mitchell is one man an ego that is still in Philadelphia and the date is still January 11, 2004. For that day was both the birth and the death of his career. He was a nobody before it and he was a nobody after it. What was that big day, you ask? I now take you back to January 11, 2004 at Lincoln Financial Field. It's the divisional playoffs against the Green Bay Packers with 1:12 to, the Eagles are trailing by 3 and the down is 4th and 26.



Good times.....gooood times. And as far as Joe Buck's call goes, David Tyree feels Freddie Mitchell's pain.
