Conference Championship Live Blog: Friday

2010 Big East Tournament Quarterfinals Live Blog
Last year on this day of the tournament, Villanova beat Marquette on a last second buzzer-beater and Syracuse and Connecticut went 6 overtimes. This is the round where the Big East tournament gets real good. A reminder for the 10,000th time that I will be out for the Cuse-GTown game and will return sometime during Nova-Marquette. But that does not mean you should join us throughout the day and night for an awesome day of basketball! Feel free to comment as long as you don't troll! (all times eastern)

Big East Quarterfinals Live Blog
It's an all day live blog, folks! And man, it should be fun. We have quite a few interesting games as well today so all in all, it should be a fun time. 49er16 will be joining me throughout the day as a fellow producer through CoverItLive, and if he is around, he will be kicking things off right at 12:00 PM EDT as I have a class from 11-12:15 which means I most likely won't be back until 12:20 or so. Big East Round 2 Open Thread
Here is the schedule for today in the Big East. All games are on ESPN.
12:00 PM: Providence vs. DePaul (winner plays Louisville)
Approx. 2:00 PM: Marquette vs. St. John's (winner plays Villanova)
7:00 PM: West Virginia vs. Notre Dame (winner plays Pittsburgh)
Approx. 9:00 PM: Syracuse vs. Seton Hall (winner plays UConn).
I will be in and out throughout the day and the number of updates will probably be a lot less than yesterday, but I'll try to get them up when I can. Enjoy the games and leave your thoughts, comments, predictions, and game commentary in the comments section.

Providence vs. DePaul
12:50 PM: I honestly can't say that I'm surprised that DePaul is hanging around in this game. I sort of had a feeling about this one. It's Providence leads 32-31 at halftime, getting that lead on a last second 3. I'll be out for various reasons from now until around 2:30 or so. I'll post updates on what happened when I get back, although chances are I'll probably be one of the last to actually know what happened.
2:35 PM The Friars survived. They beat DePaul 83-74, but from all accounts, that was not an easy 9-point win.
Marquette vs. St. John's
2:38 PM: This one could be interesting. Marquette is a team that's been struggling as of late and St. John's is the de facto home team in the Garden.
3:47 PM: Holy Hell! Marquette 38 to St. John's 10 as we start the 2nd half.
5:48 PM The beating just continued. Albeit we're going by a game against St. John's, but the Wildcats are facing a team with confidence in Marquette. Final score: 74-45 Marquette.
West Virginia vs. Notre Dame
6:51 PM: This is not college basketball related, but I'm to lazy to create a whole new post right now for this. But anyway, Peter King is reporting that the Eagles are the frontrunners for Anquan Boldin in a trade that should be completed by July. I'm not getting my hopes up, though, for we should be considering the source and considering who we are dealing with as well. I think you all know who I am talking about.
7:39 PM Woot! I love West fucking Virginia! They're completely taking it to Notre Dame, 34-16! And assuming this holds and WVU wins, there is no way that Notre Dame can be considered in the tourney. They may need to guarantee a way in, but I think if they make the semis or the finals, they will get some consideration. A loss here, though, and a blowout like this, then no, they won't get in.
8:18 PM: This one's not over yet, 41-30 WVU. The Irish are still in it early on in the 2nd half.
9:12 PM: 74-62, the Mountaineers finished off the Fighting Irish. They'll play Pittsburgh tomorrow night. And yes, while it will start a little late (12:20 EDT), I'll have a live blog of all the Big East quarterfinal games. I'll be using CoverItLive, but you can all comment by clicking on the blog that will be embeded and just leaving your name and your comment. I have not spoken to 49er16 about it, but I'm pretty sure he'll be joining me as a fellow producer in the blog. If not, I'm perfectly fine doing it alone. 10:19 PM: 36-31 the Orange lead the Pirates as they look to restore the brackets to true form after a wild first day of the Big East tournament.
10:21 PM: Mt. St. Mary's and Robert Morris are in a close one for the NEC title game, Mt. St. Mary's leads 44-41 with 2:43 to go.
10:26 PM: JEREMY CHAPELL CONNECTS WITH A 3 AND ROBERT MORRIS LEADS BY 2 WITH 1:19 TO GO! And damn you Bob Wischusen, you beat me to the Chapelle Show joke!
10:31 PM: A couple of free throws have tied us up at 46. After a weak day as far as Big East action goes, it's about time we have some exciting basketball today.
10:35 PM THE AWKWARD BOUNCE HAPPENS AGAIN! DALLAS GREEN SCOOPS UP A LOOSE BALL AND MAKES A JUMPER FOR ROBERT MORRIS WITH 2.5 SECONDS LEFT TO GIVE THEM A 2-POINT LEAD!
10:36 PM THE INBOUND PASS IS PICKED OFF! There is a foul though with 1.9 seconds left and some Robert Morris students pre-maturely rush the court. And what happened to my post between 10:36 and 10:48. Anyway, Robert Morris did win and they are dancing.
10:48 PM: Oh man, a mini basketbrawl just broke out in the Garden. It started with a hard foul by a Seton Hall player (I missed who) and things obviously escalated from there. An intentional foul on Syarcuse is called and dueling technicals.
11:16 PM: Syracuse has taken a commanding 81-58 lead with 6-minutes left. So much so that I am stepping out for a bit now. I'll have one more update most likely telling you the final score. If the game is over before I go to bed, I'll also update the conference champion list, if not, I'll do that sometime tomorrow morning.
12:31 AM: Syracuse 89, Seton Hall 74. Meanwhile on the Deuce, we have drama in the Big Sky championship! A 3-FROM MONTANA STATE TIES THE GAME WITH 10 SECONDS LEFT! BUT WAIT! AT THE OTHER END! A PASS INSIDE CONNECTS AND AN EASY DUNK PUTS PORTLAND STATE BACK ON TOP! 3.5 TO GO! UNBELIEVEABLE!
12:33 AM: The inbounds pass is caught at half court and wait, they call a timeout? 1.7 seconds just ticked off the clock for nothing! 1.8 to go. This is crazy. Meanwhile, we've got Linkin Park's "Bleed it Out" playing in the background. Just the song I want to hear before a dramatic conclusion to a conference title game. They're reviewing the clock on the timeout call. There may be more time added.
12:37 AM: They add some time back on the clock. The inbounds pass is caught AND IT'S TAKEN AWAY! PORTLAND STATE IS GOING BACK TO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT! THEY'RE THE BIG SKY CHAMPIONS!

Marquette @ Villanova Live Blog
What better way to celebrate my 100th blog post then a live blog of a big game between #12 Marquette and #13 Villanova. And while this really is not a rivalry, per se, it still should be a lot of fun.
1st Interactive Tuesday question of the night. Who should be the Big East player of the year? Go to ESPN.com and cast your votes, stat!
Marquette wins the tip. James misses a shot but Nova tipped it out of bounds. Hayward from 3 BURIES IT! Marquette jumps on top early. Nova struggles to keep possession of it but Reynolds gets it, gives it to Clark who DRAINS ONE FROM 3!
ANOTHER 3 BY MATTHEWS OF MARQUETTE! I hope you took the over. Nova inbounds, Reynolds takes one from 3 and ANOTHER 3! THIS ONE FROM REYNOLDS! Good grief! Marquette struggles with the ball and Nova gets a turnover. Anderson misses a 3, but Anderson gets it back and hits a 2. DOMINIQUE JAMES ALLEY-OOPS IT FOR MARQUETTE!

DeJuan Blair from Pittsburgh is our poll winner. Reynolds makes 1 out of 2. Butler rebounds Redding's miss. 3-shot from Marquette goes out of bounds and Nova takes over. ANDERSON IS SMOKING HOT! ANOTHER 3! Hayward connects with a basket. Cunningham gets his first of the day and a foul on Villanova at the other end.
After 2 Marquette free-throws, Anderson makes a great 2-pointer for Villanova as Dave Pasch goes crazy! Cunningham gets called for a travel as he stumbled to the ground.

James of Marquette makes somewhat of an underhanded basket! That was interesting to look at. Cunningham gets a basket after a pair of Nova misses. HAYWARD DRILLS ONE FROM 3! Reynolds from Marquette can't connect. MCNEAL GETS HIS FIRST BASKET OF THE GAME AND IT'S A 3! Timeout Villanova.

No, not really. Although he is not that bad of an analyst, I just would never want him to teach a physics class.

Anderson gets one out of the 1-and-1. Foul on Anderson, as he picks up his 2nd and the 4th for the Wildcats. James connects with a basket. FISHER FROM 3! 2-straight misses for Marquette and Nova has a chance to get back in it.
Redding misses a wide open 3. McNeal misses a 3 at the other end and Redding comes in 1-on-2 and gets called for an offensive foul! Can't say I disagree though.

Although he may not be too far off as Cunningham connects! Badly missed shot and it goes out of bounds off Nova. Can't say that I agree with that one.
Both sides miss as Reynolds connects with a beautiful layup as he slips and he gets fouled! And-1! Timeout Marquette.

Marquette makes a free throw as they follow it up by swatting a Villanova pass out of bounds. Cunningham has given Nova the lead with that jumper! McNeal gives Marquette the lead right back with his jumper. Fisher is fouled as he shoots from 3! It's James' first foul of the evening.
Fisher goes 3-for-3 from the line! 2-point lead for the Wildcats. A wideopen lay up by James ties it up. They get the ball back but turn it over. FISHER CONNECTS DEEP FROM 3-LAND!
I think we may reach my final predicted score by halftime. Offensive foul on McNeal! 57.4 seconds to go in the half. Reynolds from 3 is short and Hayward rebounds it nicely. James loses it! Loose ball scramble and it's out of bounds on Marquette! 10-seconds to go. Cunningham loses the ball but it goes off a Marquette player and with 4.5 to go the Wildcats wil have a nother chance. Fisher finds STOKES WHO DRILLS IT FROM 3 TO END THE HALF!

Ooh! A special halftime question. Who will be the next coach to reach 1,000 wins? Coach K, Jim Boehiem, Jim Calhoun, or Bob Knight? If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Coach K.
Nova starts the half with the ball and Cunningham sinks a jumper. McNeal misses and there's a whistle as Anderson is down. Turnover for the Wildcats. James misses one behind the backboard as he claims he was fouled. Steal by James, pass to McNeal who connects with a beautiful layup! Cunningham takes a jumper and he just makes that shot look easy! Hayward is a house of fire, connecting with another jumper, this time from 2-land.
Cunningham to Reynolds to the hoop. If only every basketball game was like this. This is fun to watch. Fisher has his shot blocked. Missed hook shot by Marquette and Redding at the other end misses a wide open 3-shot!

It's always good to know there are absolutely no differences between Big 10 football and Big 10 basketball. Matthews makes both free-throws. Pena with a beautiful hook over Hayward. Foul called on Shane Clark. Another foul on the inbound we've got double Ts on Pena and Hayward, respectively, as a hockey match has broken out. And now they are saying team those are team Technicals.
Foul on Cunningham after the free throw. Hayward makes one from 2 as Marquette is trying to creep back into it. Fisher misses from downtown. Foul on Fisher. McNeal makes a free throw as the Wildcat lead is now only 6.

Michigan State is about to clinch a win over Michigan. (Via SSR)
That's good news for Penn State, who will be in need of a few breaks and a hot-stretch down the road if they want to make the tournament. As of now, they are in Joe Lenardi's "Next 4 out". Although as a Big 10 team, if they do make it, my hopes are not high. For the reason, that, well, they're in the Big 10.
