The Omaha Nighthawks Of The UFL Will Be Fielding A One Man Team This Season

I can see it now. Ahman Green. The UFL's foremost quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end, offensive guard, offensive tackle, defensive end, defensive tackle, linebacker, cornerback, safety, punter, AND kicker! Can you say Omaha Nighthawk championship?

JP Losman Is Now A Championship Quarterback

How is that possible you ask? JP Losman, believe it or not, is the star quarterback of the Las Vegas Locomotives (abbreviated Locos). The Locos just won the first ever UFL championship.

So here it is. The game-winning Vegas field goal in overtime that gave Losman a Super Bowl ring as filmed live from a fan sitting in Sam Boyd Stadium.

IT'S GOOD!!! THE LAS VEGAS LOCOS ARE YOUR FIRST EVER UFL CHAMPIONS!!!!

And quite possibly the last. While the league considered this an experimental year, I think the horrid attendance to the games has spoken and the experiment has failed.

Besides, this league just gave JP Losman a championship ring. Forget everything else, isn't that mere fact alone enough to consider the league a failure?

How Could We Have Forgotten?

The UFL played their championship game today!!! Who could have forgotten this?

The game is currently in the 3rd quarter with the Florida Tuskers leading the Las Vegas Locos 7-3. The real reason for this post: to laugh in bewilderment at the jerseys the teams are wearing.

Simply embarrassing.

And the UFL wonders why attendance in any stadium has not gotten above 20,000 with the lows being hardly 5,000 fans.

I think it is safe to say the idea that everyone knew would be a failure has in fact failed.

Maybe The UFL Know What They Are Doing After All

I, like many, have pretty much laughed out loud at the notion of the United Football League (UFL). And I do not think I've made much of a secret about that on here. However, despite some of the idiotic things they are doing in going about this, they may actually be on to something. Could it be that Michael Vick may not play in the NFL this year, after all? Could it be that he goes to the UFL?

According to this article by Howard Balzer of Comcast.net (Comcast.net does not let me copy their article and I do not feel like typing a block quote), they are trying to persuade him to come to the UFL. The article also goes on to identify who the head coaches of each team will be (the official announcement is coming on Wednesday).

Las Vegas/Los Angeles: Jim Fassel
San Francisco/Sacramento: Dennis Green (I wonder who he thinks they are)
Orlando: Jim Haslett
New York/Hartford: Ted Cottrell

The biggest way to draw attention to yourselves and get people to watch is to bring in some big names, and that appears to be what the UFL is trying to do. If only I got Versus on campus, I might check it out. Then again, I'd tune in the first week to watch the trainwreck anyway, so that's not really saying much, I guess.

The UFL Has Actually Found A Cable TV Home!

I did not think I would live to see the day, but the United Football League (a.k.a. the UFL) has gotten a home on cable TV. Guess where? They're on Versus! Well, it is where the NHL went to die get a broadcast deal to bring back interest into the sport! From Awful Announcing via UFL PR

The United Football League announced that VERSUS, a national sports network in more than 75 million homes, will air the League’s “Premiere” season beginning in October 2009. VERSUS will air live weekly games beginning on Thursday, October 8, and continuing through the Championship Game scheduled to air Thanksgiving weekend. Each live telecast will be approximately three hours and all games will be produced and available in HD. The complete schedule will be announced this summer.

In its “Premiere” year, the UFL will host teams in Las Vegas, New York, Orlando and San Francisco. There are also plans to play additional games in Hartford and Los Angeles. The season will conclude with a Championship Game tentatively scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend in Las Vegas. On Wednesday, the UFL will announce its four coaches at a press conference in San Francisco. League officials are in final negotiations with various stadiums and these agreements will be announced as they are completed.

“We are excited to be the television home of the UFL in its “Premiere” season,” said Marc Fein, Executive Vice President of Programming, Production and Business Operations for VERSUS. “The UFL has put together a great management team and sound plan and we are looking forward to the opportunity to expose these games to a national audience each week.”
So let's see, you are going to have a 4-team league at the same time the NFL and college football are on, show it on one of the more obscure sports networks, and you are going to hope to succeed? Oh man, this has comedby show written all over it!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I Introduce To You The UFL!

What do the World Football League, the United States Football League, and the XFL all have in common? If you answered, they are all failed football leagues, you are correct!

So now, soon to be added to that list, I give to you the United Football League! That's right the UFL is starting up in October. No, I am not joking. Yes, someone is actually trying to start a football league in these economic times. Yes, they are essentially going to try to compete with the NFL and college football. And yes, I think these people may be officially insane.

From Reuters....

The United Football League said on Monday it will kick off league play in October, with four teams playing games in seven cities.

The four teams playing in the first season is short of the six to eight the smaller rival of the National Football League had hoped to open with and league executives blamed the recession.

"The combination of the recession and the recent troubles on Wall Street left many investors unable to make the commitment we required for overall financial stability," The UFL said in a statement.

"There is no question that the economy has played a role in our decision-making and will continue to do so for the unforeseen future," it added.
Oh Yay! Another football league that will fail! I'm so giddy! And as if the excitement was not great enough, here are the four unfortunate cities that will host the original 4 UFL teams.

New York/Hartford, Connecticut (I really wish I was making this up.)
Las Vegas/Los Angeles
San Francisco/Sacramento
Orlando, Florida

Games will be played on Thursdays and Fridays with one planned national game of the week (Anyone want to bet that ESPN will pick up the UFL?) and the excitement will culminate with a national championship game on Thanksgiving!

I guess you could always look on the bright side of this whole story, Vince McMahon is no longer the biggest idiot in the history of football.
