So now, soon to be added to that list, I give to you the United Football League! That's right the UFL is starting up in October. No, I am not joking. Yes, someone is actually trying to start a football league in these economic times. Yes, they are essentially going to try to compete with the NFL and college football. And yes, I think these people may be officially insane.
From Reuters....
The United Football League said on Monday it will kick off league play in October, with four teams playing games in seven cities.Oh Yay! Another football league that will fail! I'm so giddy! And as if the excitement was not great enough, here are the four
The four teams playing in the first season is short of the six to eight the smaller rival of the National Football League had hoped to open with and league executives blamed the recession.
"The combination of the recession and the recent troubles on Wall Street left many investors unable to make the commitment we required for overall financial stability," The UFL said in a statement.
"There is no question that the economy has played a role in our decision-making and will continue to do so for the unforeseen future," it added.
New York/Hartford, Connecticut (I really wish I was making this up.)
Las Vegas/Los Angeles
San Francisco/Sacramento
Orlando, Florida
Games will be played on Thursdays and Fridays with one planned national game of the week (Anyone want to bet that ESPN will pick up the UFL?) and the excitement will culminate with a national championship game on Thanksgiving!
I guess you could always look on the bright side of this whole story, Vince McMahon is no longer the biggest idiot in the history of football.

Yeah, that league won't last a year.
ReplyDeleteI was one of the few who liked the XFL, but as long as you're up against the "wannabe a monopoly" league like the NFL, you are screwed.
Oh well, I have the CFL to look forward to in July!
World Football League.
ReplyDeleteThat is all.
It'd be one thing if they tried to do what Arena Football does and play in the spring (or the summer like the CFL), but these guys are going right up against the NFL (they're championship is scheduled for Thanksgiving day, for goodness sake!)
ReplyDeleteAlthough I hardly remember it, I don't remember the XFL being awful, per se. And the UFL might not be a bad league, it just won't have a chance of survival.
