@ 49er16: And I suspect that a similar fate would have befallen the Eagles if they did beat the Bears. Montana and Rice would have run rampant on that Eagles defense which gave up tons and tons of pass yards. The Eagles saving grace defensively was their ability to generate turnovers (consider it an entire secondary made up of Asante Samuel!), but I think Montana and Rice would be able to turn the yards into points, thus nullifying the turnovers.
Plus, I believe the Eagles would have had to travel to Candlestick, where the 49ers were basically unbeatable during those years. I still remember how shocking it was when the Vikings went to SF and won during the 1987 playoffs.
@Kt1000: You were shocked. Eddie D. almost fired Bill Walsh after that game. The Niners went on to beat the Vikings two years in a row after that game.
The Bears were thrashed at home a week later by the Niners in the NFC Championship Game.
