Four Announce Teams Call Kevin Bieksa's Western Conference Finals Game-Winner

Last year, announcers had a difficult time knowing exactly what had happened when Patrick Kane scored the Stanley Cup winning goal in Game 6 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals. Last night, Kevin Bieska scored a similar goal to propel the Canucks to their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance since 1994. Edler sent the puck off the stanchion, the puck then ricocheted back to Bieksa who shot it past Antti Niemi for the game-winner. The problem, once the puck went off the stanchion, no one knew where it had gone until it bounced out of the net. This set up for some interesting calls from the boys in the booths. I have been able to find two TV calls (Versus and CBC) and two radio calls (Sharks radio and Canucks radio) of the goal. Everyone fell flat on their face last year with Kane. Let's see how we fared this year, shall we!

First up, "The Voice" Dave Strader, Brian Engblom, and Darren Pang on Versus.

Oof. Not only was The Voice caught completely off guard, but all three seemed certain the puck had gone off the netting until they saw the definitive replay that said it hit the stanchion.

Next up, three people who were in Philadelphia for the Kane goal, Jim Hughson, Craig Simpson, and Glenn Healy on CBC.

Oy ve. "Up in the air....Score!". Way to describe the action, Jim. Craig Simpson claimed he thought it went off the netting before Hughson went into his dramatic "Canucks are going to the Stanley Cup Finals call" 15 seconds after the puck crossed the line. Congrats guys, you are 0 for 2.

Here is a very surprised Dan Rusanowsky calling the goal for Sharks radio.

No YouTube video exists, so click here for the audio.

Not bad for a losing announcer, although he clearly lost it as well. Not a bad call though afterwards, and not once did he mention that it may have gone off the netting. He did not correctly identify stanchion, but he did identify off the glass, which is better than netting. Plus one for him.

And lastly, here is Canucks announcer John Shorthouse

No YouTube video exists, so click here for the audio.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! After all these attempts this year and last year, we finally got someone to give a good dramatic call that did not sound lost, confused, surprised, or mentioned things that did not actually happen.

So congrats, Canucks fans. I take it you will be replaying the call from John Shorthouse for many years to come.

2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs Conference Finals Schedule

After one of the best first rounds in Stanley Cup Playoffs history, three of the 4 conference semifinal series histories were complete duds. The fourth was one of the best seven game hockey series ever played. Go figure. This year has been proof positive why I think the Stanley Cup Playoffs are the best playoffs in sports. Now onto the schedule for the Conference Final round which surely must have the NHL hoping ends in a Stanley Cup Finals berth for the Boston Bruins. If not, their run of 3 straight Stanley Cup Finals with big hockey markets that people watch may come tumbling down. No more local broadcasts. In the U.S., all Stanley Cup Playoff games from here on out will be exclusively on Versus and NBC. Which means regardless of whether or not you live in your team's market or not, the announcers listed here are the announcers you will hear in the next round. (all times ET)

Failure On Figueroa: Sharks Complete Improbable 4-0 Comeback

Only four times in the history of the Stanley Cup Playoffs has a team been down by four or more goals in a playoff game and comeback to win. Thanks to a 4-0 early 2nd period Kings lead followed in a few hours by a remarkable comeback and an overtime game-winner from Devin Setoguchi, the 2011 San Jose Sharks can say they are one of those four teams with their 6-5 overtime win tonight at Staples Center in what will surely go down as one of the greatest games in Stanley Cup Playoff history.

The other three 4-or-more goal comebacks in the Stanley Cup Playoffs:

1971: Habs beat the Bruins 7-5 after trailing by 4. The Bruins are on the bad side of this chronology. Imagine that.

1982: The Miracle On Manchester. This is the only 5-goal comeback in the history of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It's also the subject of one of this year's History Will Be Made commercials. The Oilers were up 5-0 after 2 periods. The Oilers lost that game 6-5. Ironically enough, the Los Angeles Kings won this game.

1985: Minnesota North Stars beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 after trailing 4-0. The North Stars are the only team to have such a comeback in a game in a playoff series, and still lose the playoff series. The '71 Habs would go on to win the Stanley Cup. The 82 Kings got eliminated in the next round.

Congrats to the San Jose Sharks and their fans for what will surely be known as one of the greatest games in Stanley Cup Playoff history. If you think about how long the Stanley Cup Playoffs date back to, and then when you consider that a 4-goal comeback has only happened 4 times in that lengthy history, you know you have witnessed something special.

Eff You, Logan Couture

If the Penguins come back and take the Atlantic Division, the Flyers will have but one man to blame: Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks. Coming into the game 7 points behind the Flyers, the Penguins needed to salvage anything they could against the visiting San Jose Sharks. Just getting one point out of the game would be a huge improvement to the Penguins situation as being 6 points behind the Flyers (3 games) with is much better than being 7 points out (4 games). With just over a minute left, and up by a goal, Logan Couture had a chance to put the game out of reach with an empty net goal. Only instead of scoring, this happened.

The Sharks could not win it in the last minute and the game went to overtime. It does not matter that the Sharks would go on to win the game in awesome fashion in said overtime. The fact of the matter is the Penguins got a crucial Bettman point. The Penguins are now three games behind the Flyers instead of four because of Couture's inability to perform simple tasks to skate up to an empty net and put the puck in. So if it comes down to it, and the Penguins win the Atlantic Division by 1 point, there will be only one man worthy of your scorn in the NHL. Your potential 2010-2011 Philadelphia Flyers goat: Logan Couture, ladies and gentlemen!

Flyers Essentially Acquire The Rights To Nabokov For At Least A Week In Verbal Agreement With Sharks

I am a frequent critic of Paul Holmgren, but I will give credit where credit is due. Now I am not a huge Nabokov fan and am not thrilled about the prospect of getting him, but to acquire his rights for almost nothing, as the Flyers have in fact done so, is pretty ingenious. From CSN Philly's Tim Panaccio
According to league sources, the Flyers have a verbal agreement in place with the San Jose Sharks to fork over a seventh-round pick next season if they can sign San Jose’s Evgeni Nabokov before July 1, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Don Meehan, the agent who represents Nabokov, told CSNPhilly.com earlier that his client’s no-trade clause is not an issue. San Jose obviously has given the Flyers permission to get a deal done and Meehan is willing to engage the Flyers ahead of July 1.
Make no mistake about it, Evgeni Nabokov, even at 34 going on 35, is an improvement over Michael Leighton. He is a solid regular season goaltender, but he has a nasty habit of coming up real small in big games. While it certainly was not the first time it happened, you can look at Russia's quarterfinal match against Canada in the 2010 Olympics as the most prominent example of Nabokov's smallness in big games. All that being said and no disrespect to San Jose and Team Russia, but Evgeni Nabokov was never behind a defense as good as the Flyers defense is now with the likes of Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen, and Matt Carle.

Just because the Flyers basically have Nabokov's rights, though, does not mean he will be a Flyer this coming season. The Flyers have his rights until July 1 when he becomes an unrestricted free agent if he goes unsigned. If the Flyers sign him between now and July 1, they will only owe San Jose a 7th round draft pick in the 2011 Draft.

Again, I am not thrilled about Nabokov and would like the Flyers to be thinking more long term than this, but if the Flyers are dead set about getting Nabokov, this is most certainly the best way to go about it.

The Flyers And Penguins Make A Trade At The Draft

The Flyers have a grand total of 0 draft picks, but holy hell was today full of Flyers rumors. The most prominent one being that the Flyers want the rights of Evgeni Nabokov. They are apparently in competition with one other team, who is yet to be named. The deal could get done either later tonight or tomorrow, sources are contradicting themselves, as they have all evening long.

As far as the Flyers trading the rights to Dan Hamhuis to Pittsburgh is concerned, let's make one thing perfect, the Flyers did exactly that. They traded away his rights. His rights. Pittsburgh still has to sign him, and if the rumors are true that Hamhuis only wants to play for a Western Conference team (or Pittsburgh just can't sign him), the Flyers would have officially conned the Pittsburgh Penguins out of a 3rd round draft pick in the 2011 draft. That ain't too shabby, folks. But if he does sign with Pittsburgh, then it is definitely trouble for the Flyers as Pittsburgh signing Hamhuis would likely make Pittsburgh better, provided he does not give them the big cap hit that he is projected to give wherever he does end up signing and Pittsburgh keep Sergei Gonchar, which is looking more and more unlikely. Sergei Gonchar is better than Hamhuis, and if Hamhuis is Gonchar's direct replacement, then once again, the Flyers would have just conned the Penguins.

Now the million dollar question: Is Evgeni Nabokov the next goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers? Unless the Sharks give the Flyers the world's greatest discount, the answer better be no.

2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs Conference Finals Schedule (UPDATED WITH VERSUS ANNOUNCERS)

Last night happened. The Flyers have home ice advantage in the Eastern Conference Finals. Incredible.

Before I get into the schedule, I will get into some notes on these series.

  • The top two teams in the Western Conference are facing each other whereas the bottom two teams in the Eastern Conference are facing each other.
  • This is the first time ever a 7-seed as faced and 8-seed in the Conference Finals. The closest before this was a 6-seed versus an 8-seed in 2006 when the #6 seeded Anaheim Mighty Ducks lost to the #8 seed Edmonton Oilers.
  • The 1975 Islanders accomplished their successful comeback in round of 8 teams left. In the semifinals (now the Conference Finals), they fell behind 3-0 again in the series, battled back to force Game 7, only to lose to the eventual champs, Philadelphia Flyers. Will history repeat itself? If so, the Flyers will fall just short (again) of the Stanley Cup.
  • The remaining team with the most recent Stanley Cup appearance: Philadelphia Flyers in 1997. It was in that series that I developed my dislike of the Detroit Red Wings that I still carry with me today, although the reasons are now different, the seeds of dislike were planted in 1997.
  • The remaining team with most recent Stanley Cup victory: Montreal Canadiens in 1993.
Now with all that out of the way, let's get to the Conference Championship schedule in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs. All announcers are confirmed and official.

Eastern Conference Finals

#8 Montreal Canadiens vs. #7 Philadelphia Flyers

Game 1: May 16: Montreal @ Philadelphia 7:00 (Versus - Joe Beninati and Daryl Reaugh, SR: Bob Harwood) (CBC - Bob Cole and Garry Galley, ItG: Glenn Healy, SR: Elliotte Friedman)
Game 2: May 18: Montreal @ Philadelphia 7:00 (Versus - Joe Beninati and Daryl Reaugh, SR: Bob Harwood) (CBC - Bob Cole and Garry Galley, ItG: Glenn Healy, SR: Elliotte Friedman)
Game 3: May 20: Philadelphia @ Montreal 7:00 (Versus - Joe Beninati and Daryl Reaugh, SR: Bob Harwood) (CBC - Bob Cole and Garry Galley, ItG: Glenn Healy, SR: Elliotte Friedman)
Game 4: May 22: Philadelphia @ Montreal 3:00 (NBC) (CBC - Bob Cole and Garry Galley, ItG: Glenn Healy, SR: Elliotte Friedman)
Game 5: May 24: Montreal @ Philadelphia 7:00 (Versus - Joe Beninati and Daryl Reaugh, SR: Bob Harwood) (CBC - Bob Cole and Garry Galley, ItG: Glenn Healy, SR: Elliotte Friedman)
Game 6: May 26: Philadelphia @ Montreal 7:00 (Versus - Joe Beninati and Daryl Reaugh, SR: Bob Harwood) (CBC - Bob Cole and Garry Galley, ItG: Glenn Healy, SR: Elliotte Friedman)
Game 7: May 28: Philadelphia @ Montreal 7:00 (Versus - Joe Beninati and Daryl Reaugh, SR: Bob Harwood) (CBC - Bob Cole and Garry Galley, ItG: Glenn Healy, SR: Elliotte Friedman)

Western Conference Finals

#2 Chicago Blackhawks vs. #1 San Jose Sharks

Game 1: May 16: Chicago @ San Jose 3:00 (NBC) (TSN - Chris Cuthbert and Pierre McGuire)
Game 2: May 18: Chicago @ San Jose 10:00 (Versus - Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk, SR: Charissa Thompson) (TSN - Chris Cuthbert and Pierre McGuire)
Game 3: May 21: San Jose @ Chicago 8:00 (Versus - Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk, SR: Charissa Thompson) (TSN - Chris Cuthbert and Pierre McGuire)
Game 4: May 23: San Jose @ Chicago 3:00 (NBC) (CBC - Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson, SR: Scott Oake and Kelly Hrudey)
Game 5: May 25: Chicago @ San Jose 9:00 (Versus - Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk, SR: Charissa Thompson) (CBC - Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson, SR: Scott Oake and Kelly Hrudey)
Game 6: May 27: San Jose @ Chicago 8:00 (Versus - Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk, SR: Charissa Thompson) (CBC - Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson, SR: Scott Oake and Kelly Hrudey)
Game 7: May 29: Chicago @ San Jose 8:00 (Versus - Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk, SR: Charissa Thompson) (CBC - Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson, SR: Scott Oake and Kelly Hrudey)

And now, the moment I am sure you have been waiting on. The shocking announcement regarding Versus' coverage of the following round. Per JP of the506 on Twitter, Joe Beninati will NOT be working the conference finals this year. Instead, it will be John Forslund. I am yet to see this 100% confirmed, but JP is a reliable source. If this is true, I am guessing that they will put Forslund on the Montreal-Philly series on Versus with Daryl Reaugh (except for the NBC Game 4, likely to be done by their normal crew of Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk). In the Chicago-San Jose series, that would leave Mike and Eddie Olczyk to do both the Versus and NBC broadcasts of that one. Again, those are my guesses and are not to be taken as gospel. I will update this post once there is confirmation.

The bad news: Beninati and Bob "I'm standing here with Peter Lavalet" Harwood.
The good news: RAZOR! RAZOR! RAZOR! Daryl Reaugh is awesome and I am so glad he is announcing the Flyers conference championship series, even if it is with Beninati.

When Did E. Stan Kroenke Buy GM Place, HP Pavilion, And Mellon Arena?

What is it with these arena owners and them having little to no faith that their hockey team is going to advance past the first round of the playoffs? Last year it was the Denver Broncos and their fun little encounter with WWE, this year it is the Sharks, Canucks, Penguins, and musicians whose combined age must be 832 years old. All three of the arenas these teams play in could potentially host Games 1 and 2 of the Conference Semifinals while hosting other events.

For your schedule of incompetency, here is what is scheduled when at these three arenas.

HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA: An Eagles concert this Friday and Saturday. Welcome to the Hotel Schedule Conflict. Such a lovely place....

GM Place in Vancouver, BC: A Simon & Garfunkel concert this Thursday and a Brooks & Dunn (WHO???????) concert on Saturday. I know nothing about the latter, but if you want to listen to the Sounds of Silence, all you have to do is lock yourself in your room for a few hours. There's no need to go to a concert for it.

Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, PA: Stars on Ice this Thursday. Uh.....you mean to say that a ticket has actually been bought for this? Couldn't they at least liven things up and bring back Yanni?

I have no idea what to say other than whomever books these things lack foresight or they just don't believe in the winningness of their hockey team. I know the Sharks expected to get bounced in the first round, but Vancouver and Pittsburgh? Really?

It's things like this that make you go, "wow, we really live in a world or morons, incompetent morons." Or possibly in a world of greedy arena owners who find ways to squeeze out as many pennies as they possibly can. The latter really is looking like a likely option, isn't it?

2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs: Videos Of Confused And Screaming Announcers Calling An Own Goal Will Be Made

Remember last summer when the Mets were sucking and Luis Castillo dropped a pop-up that would have won the game for the Mets, but instead because he dropped it allowed the Yankees to score 2 runs on that play and thus win the game? And remember how MLB put together an awesome announcing mash-up of the Mets TV announcers and radio announcers and the Yankees TV announcers and radio announcers calling the play?

Granted I don't have the technology to mash them all into one video, but with a play as epic as Dan Boyle's own goal last night, I figured why not put together all of the calls of the goal that I could find. Several videos have gone up and the one with the most views already has over 200,000 of them (Dan, you've gone viral, my friend). Trust me, the different reactions to the goal are almost as amusing as the goal itself. Almost.

First off, the one you've probably seen already and the one that I posted last night/this morning: The Versus broadcast (which used the CSN-Cal Sharks announcers) with Randy Hahn and Drew Remenda.

And now the broadcast team that does not put it all on Dan Boyle, the Colorado Avalanche TV broadcasters Mike Haynes and Peter McNab

Up next, the lone neutral broadcast of the bunch, the CBC broadcast with Mark Lee and Kevin Weekes:

If only Versus had stuck with the broadcast for that long to see that ovation for Craig Anderson. Wow. That is something special and something that he will never forget. Tip your hat, Craig. You (maybe not the rest of the Avalance team, but you) deserve it.

And now for my personal favorite. If this guy (Marc Moser) does not end up right next to Al Michaels in the hockey hall of fame for this awesomely screaming call of the goal, then something is seriously wrong in this world.

"SCOOOOOOORE!!!!! OH MY GOODNESSS!!!! THE AVS HAVE WON IN OVERTIME!!!!!! I THINK THE SAN JOSE SHARKS JUST THREW IT INTO THEIR OWN NET!!!!!!! THEY DIIIIIIIIIIDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!"

YOU CAN STOP SCREAMING NOW!

Actually, on second thought, no, please, continue screaming, that call is flat out epic.

And as if I did not pile on more Dan Boyle enough for this, here are 2 History Will Be Made parodies commemorating Dan Boyle.

This one is just all sorts of awesome, not only does it have a funny tag but it brings back my new favorite screaming announcer, Marc Moser!

And lastly, my personal favorite, which may even get some Sharks fans and serious Shark sympathizers laughing.

The Funniest Overtime Ending You Will Ever Seen

(Video originally posted at Broad Street Hockey)

If I said at the beginning of the playoffs that a team will score an own goal in overtime to lose a game for his team, please name it, chances are, you would have said the team it actually happened to. Words can't describe the bizarre hilarity of this.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the Sharks, I don't wish ill upon them, and my heart goes out to Dan Boyle who must be beyond sick right now, but good grief, this is just flat out hilarious. The team with the reputation of choking in the playoffs has come up with 2 all-timers in the past week, and frankly, I think this one takes the cake. I have never seen anything like this in my life. Wow.

Flyers-Sharks Live Blog

49er16 is a Sharks fan. I'm a Flyers fan. This live blog is going to be a pure love fest, right?
