Michigan State, Notre Dame, Little Giants, And The Controversy That Really Should Not Be One

A "what the fuck are you thinking you fucking imbecile?" play if it does not work and the "CALL OF THE YEAR!" if it does work. And this play, known as Little Giants to Michigan State, worked to perfection, giving Michigan State a 34-31 OT victory over Notre Dame.

Now I am sure you are wondering, what on earth did I post 2 pictures showing ABC's play clock at 0 with Michigan State having not snapped the ball? To prove a point. ABC's play clock is not in sync with the play clock on the scoreboard. Look at the play clock on MSU's scoreboard. It still says 1 on it. Look at it on the 2nd screenshot. It says 0. Now watch the play. Per someone who can count tenths of a second better than I can, Michigan State got the snap off with .2 of a second expired after the ABC play clock expired. Now, the referees obviously cannot see that computerized play clock. They can only see the stadium one. Based on the screenshots, it can be reasonably assumed that the out of syncness is by .1 second. That leaves .1 second for the referees, who have to look for other things than just delays of game (i.e. false starts, offsides, illegal motion, etc.), to look up, notice the play clock has expired, recognize it is delay of game, and blow the whistle all in .1 of a second. Is it humanly feasible to blow that whistle in time? Probably, yes. A trained individual looking at the play clock could blow a whistle between the instant the clock expires and .1 seconds after said expiration. But given the nature of the referee's other responsibilities, is it reasonable to assume that we will get a delay of game whistle .1 seconds after the play clock expires? No, it is not.

And even if the estimation of tenths of a second is off here, blowing a whistle for delay of game is not a science. The next time you are watching a football game, watch how long it takes for a referee to blow a delay of game whistle. Often times it can take 1 to 2 whole seconds after the expiration of a play clock, though a referee who spots it at the just right instant probably has the play dead in .5 seconds. Notre Dame fans are going to get pissy about it. Heck, they already are, but until the age of robot referees hits us, you are not going to see delay of game penalties called that quickly in any level of football. It is just not reasonable to expect a referee who is watching for other infractions not clock related in addition to delay of game to blow a whistle for delay of game less than two-tenths of a second after the play clock expires.

(Note: If you are having problems reading the stadium scoreboard play clock, click on the pictures to enlarge. The difference between the 1 and the 0 is clear as day once enlarged, though unfortunately this is the largest Blogger will allow you to make them without pixelation.)

Update:  Here is a tremendous breakdown of the clock, the graphics, and the situation.

The Big East issued the following explanation that I agree 100% with.
"After review, the conference believes that the game officials correctly applied the proper mechanics and guidelines that are in place to determine, in a consistent manner, when a flag should be thrown for delay of game. The responsibility is assigned to the back judge, who in this situation was standing beneath the upright. Proper mechanics dictate that his focus be directed to the play clock as it approaches zero. When the play clock display reads zero, he must re-direct his attention to the ball. At that time, if the snap has not started, a flag will be thrown for delay of game. If the snap has begun, no flag will be thrown.

Under these procedures, there will always be a small amount of lag time between the time the clock reads zero and the time the back judge is able to see the football. On the play in question, this lag time created the situation where it appears the play clock expired just before the snap. We believe the snap occurred well within the normal lag time for the back judge to make this determination. This play is not reviewable under current NCAA rules."
That's a clean, fair and square win for Michigan State. I don't think I have ever seen a delay of game called 1/5 of a second after the play clock expires. If you are an upset Irish fan or just someone who is unhappy with the call, this video says it best. Deal with it.

Last year on this day of the tournament, Villanova beat Marquette on a last second buzzer-beater and Syracuse and Connecticut went 6 overtimes. UConn Wins One For Jazz

After 3 excruciatingly rough losses following the loss of their teammate Jasper Howard, UConn finally won a game and they did so on the biggest of scales. It was not easy though. With a chance to win it in regulation, Notre Dame fumbled the ball and UConn recovered it. A big Dixon gain put them in field goal range. However, the FG with 3 seconds left was shanked and it went to overtime. After trading touchdowns in the first OT, UConn was able to hold ND to a field goal in the 2nd overtime. UConn then got the ball and a chance to respond. This was for Jazz.

Simply an incredible finish and while that may be the end of Charlie Weis' tenure in South Bend, the story of the day and of the game has to be UConn, finally winning a game since the death of Jasper Howard. Despite the tough last-second losses the past 3 games, they never gave up. Despite missing a game-winning field goal, they never gave up. And they persevered. And finally tonight, they prevailed. That is what heart is all about. Congrats to UConn. They deversve it.

As does Notre Dame. They deserve this as well.

FYI, as soon as the Randy Edsell interview is up on YouTube, I'll add it as an update. It will put a smile on your face and maybe even a lump in your throat.

Update: Here's a local news broadcast showing highlights of the game with an abridged version of the Edsell interview, but it's better than nothing, I guess. If the full version comes up, I will surely put that here instead.

Lou Holtz Explains Why They Call Him Dr. Lou; Makes No Sense In The Process

We all know that Lou Holtz is picking Notre Dame to make it to the championship game, but now, seconds after Sean Hannity declared that he would think about running for office, Lou Holtz decides that that is the best time in the world to talk about being called an "idiot" and why he is called Dr. Lou. From TV Newser

Ah, good times! I do not quite understand why Sean Hannity insists on having Lou Holtz on his show (this is not the first time Holtz has been on), but whenever he does, it's pure comedy gold. Forget Sean Hannity, what if Lou Holtz decided to run for Congress or the Presidency? You know, Holtz for public office might be the single force that systematically destroys this great nation.......

Big East Round 2 Open Thread

Here is the schedule for today in the Big East. All games are on ESPN.

12:00 PM: Providence vs. DePaul (winner plays Louisville)
Approx. 2:00 PM: Marquette vs. St. John's (winner plays Villanova)
7:00 PM: West Virginia vs. Notre Dame (winner plays Pittsburgh)
Approx. 9:00 PM: Syracuse vs. Seton Hall (winner plays UConn).

I will be in and out throughout the day and the number of updates will probably be a lot less than yesterday, but I'll try to get them up when I can. Enjoy the games and leave your thoughts, comments, predictions, and game commentary in the comments section.

Enjoy the day!

Providence vs. DePaul

12:50 PM: I honestly can't say that I'm surprised that DePaul is hanging around in this game. I sort of had a feeling about this one. It's Providence leads 32-31 at halftime, getting that lead on a last second 3. I'll be out for various reasons from now until around 2:30 or so. I'll post updates on what happened when I get back, although chances are I'll probably be one of the last to actually know what happened.

2:35 PM The Friars survived. They beat DePaul 83-74, but from all accounts, that was not an easy 9-point win.

Marquette vs. St. John's

2:38 PM: This one could be interesting. Marquette is a team that's been struggling as of late and St. John's is the de facto home team in the Garden.

3:47 PM: Holy Hell! Marquette 38 to St. John's 10 as we start the 2nd half.

5:48 PM The beating just continued. Albeit we're going by a game against St. John's, but the Wildcats are facing a team with confidence in Marquette. Final score: 74-45 Marquette.

West Virginia vs. Notre Dame

6:51 PM: This is not college basketball related, but I'm to lazy to create a whole new post right now for this. But anyway, Peter King is reporting that the Eagles are the frontrunners for Anquan Boldin in a trade that should be completed by July. I'm not getting my hopes up, though, for we should be considering the source and considering who we are dealing with as well. I think you all know who I am talking about.

7:39 PM Woot! I love West fucking Virginia! They're completely taking it to Notre Dame, 34-16! And assuming this holds and WVU wins, there is no way that Notre Dame can be considered in the tourney. They may need to guarantee a way in, but I think if they make the semis or the finals, they will get some consideration. A loss here, though, and a blowout like this, then no, they won't get in.

8:18 PM: This one's not over yet, 41-30 WVU. The Irish are still in it early on in the 2nd half.

9:12 PM: 74-62, the Mountaineers finished off the Fighting Irish. They'll play Pittsburgh tomorrow night. And yes, while it will start a little late (12:20 EDT), I'll have a live blog of all the Big East quarterfinal games. I'll be using CoverItLive, but you can all comment by clicking on the blog that will be embeded and just leaving your name and your comment. I have not spoken to 49er16 about it, but I'm pretty sure he'll be joining me as a fellow producer in the blog. If not, I'm perfectly fine doing it alone. However, I encourage all of you to come and visit and comment. It will be a fun, crazy day.

Seton Hall vs. Syracuse

10:19 PM: 36-31 the Orange lead the Pirates as they look to restore the brackets to true form after a wild first day of the Big East tournament.

10:21 PM: Mt. St. Mary's and Robert Morris are in a close one for the NEC title game, Mt. St. Mary's leads 44-41 with 2:43 to go.

10:26 PM: JEREMY CHAPELL CONNECTS WITH A 3 AND ROBERT MORRIS LEADS BY 2 WITH 1:19 TO GO! And damn you Bob Wischusen, you beat me to the Chapelle Show joke!

10:31 PM: A couple of free throws have tied us up at 46. After a weak day as far as Big East action goes, it's about time we have some exciting basketball today.

10:35 PM THE AWKWARD BOUNCE HAPPENS AGAIN! DALLAS GREEN SCOOPS UP A LOOSE BALL AND MAKES A JUMPER FOR ROBERT MORRIS WITH 2.5 SECONDS LEFT TO GIVE THEM A 2-POINT LEAD!

10:36 PM THE INBOUND PASS IS PICKED OFF! There is a foul though with 1.9 seconds left and some Robert Morris students pre-maturely rush the court. And what happened to my post between 10:36 and 10:48. Anyway, Robert Morris did win and they are dancing.

10:48 PM: Oh man, a mini basketbrawl just broke out in the Garden. It started with a hard foul by a Seton Hall player (I missed who) and things obviously escalated from there. An intentional foul on Syarcuse is called and dueling technicals.

11:16 PM: Syracuse has taken a commanding 81-58 lead with 6-minutes left. So much so that I am stepping out for a bit now. I'll have one more update most likely telling you the final score. If the game is over before I go to bed, I'll also update the conference champion list, if not, I'll do that sometime tomorrow morning.

12:31 AM: Syracuse 89, Seton Hall 74. Meanwhile on the Deuce, we have drama in the Big Sky championship! A 3-FROM MONTANA STATE TIES THE GAME WITH 10 SECONDS LEFT! BUT WAIT! AT THE OTHER END! A PASS INSIDE CONNECTS AND AN EASY DUNK PUTS PORTLAND STATE BACK ON TOP! 3.5 TO GO! UNBELIEVEABLE!

12:33 AM: The inbounds pass is caught at half court and wait, they call a timeout? 1.7 seconds just ticked off the clock for nothing! 1.8 to go. This is crazy. Meanwhile, we've got Linkin Park's "Bleed it Out" playing in the background. Just the song I want to hear before a dramatic conclusion to a conference title game. They're reviewing the clock on the timeout call. There may be more time added.

12:37 AM: They add some time back on the clock. The inbounds pass is caught AND IT'S TAKEN AWAY! PORTLAND STATE IS GOING BACK TO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT! THEY'RE THE BIG SKY CHAMPIONS!

Big East Round 1 Open Thread

While my conference tourney Live-Blog-A-Palooza won't officially start until Thursday, I will have open threads for you today and tomorrow for the first 2 rounds of Big East tourney play. Personally, I will not be watching every moment of these games (even tomorrow when they are actually on TV), but I will be scoreboard watching and if there's an upset brewing, I'll give you the low-down on what's going on (or if there's just a close game). Here's your schedule for the game, and all of them can be seen on the Big East website.

12:00 PM: #9 Cincinnati vs. #16 DePaul (winner meets Providence)
Approx. 2:00 PM: #12 Georgetown vs. #13 St. John's (winner meets Marquette)
7:00 PM: #10 Notre Dame vs. # 15 Rutgers (winner meets West Virginia)
Approx 9:00 PM: #11 Seton Hall vs. #14 South Florida (winner meets Syracuse)

I'll be posting updates throughout the day. Enjoy!

Cincinnati vs. DePaul

1:18 PM: Sorry about the delay. I had a few errands to run after my class. Anyway, DePaul is hanging tough with Cincinnati, 40-38 the Bearcats are winning with 13:44 to go. Now we know why Cincinnati is most likely out of the tournament.

1:29 PM: Damn, It's a 6-point lead....for DePaul! Yes, DePaul, winless DePaul of the Big East. And the announcers are pimping this as the first time a #16 seed ever won in post-season college basketball. Urm, dude, they're playing a #9 seed in a conference tournament.

1:47 PM: Less than 3 minutes to go and DePaul is up 7, 57-50.

1:55 PM: 65-55 DePaul with 1-minute left and I think it is safe to say that for the first time this year, DePaul has won a game in the Big east! They're playing Providence tomorrow!

1:59 PM: History in the Garden! The first #16 seed to ever win a Division I post-season men's basketball game. The final score: DePaul 67, Cincinnati 57.

Georgetown vs. St. John's

2:59 PM: Georgetown and St. John's are in a close one, 22-20 the Hoyas are winning. What are the odds if G-Town wins this game that ESPN will be talking about their tourney chances tomorrow?

3:04 PM: "You can save 15%.....or more...on car insurance". Nice smooth promo Mr. PbP guy whose name I do not know.

3:14 PM St. John's is leading G-Town 30-28 at the half. May St. John's win so that we never, ever, ever have to hear ESPN talk about Georgetown's tourney chances again. The same will apply with Notre Dame later on, although they are a little more credible than G-Town.

3:35 PM Ugh. I just noticed that in the center of the court up top there is a freecreditreport.com logo. Ooh damn, I missed how, but there is a ref practically unconscious on the floor.

3:40 PM: It turns out the ref clunked heads with a St. John's player. The stretcher was initially brought out for the official but it was quickly waved away as he was able to walk off on his own power. 34-33 St. John's with 16:33 to go in the game.

4:09 PM:Are we looking at a 2nd upset today? St. John's is beating Georgetown 46-44 with 7:29 to go.

4:27 PM: Under 2-minutes to go and it is a 2-point game. St. John's is leading. Make that a 4-point game with 1:34 to go.

4:29 PM: JESSE SAPP CONNECTS FROM 3! The Hoyas are now within 2 with 1:09 to go.

4:31 PM St. John's takes the shot clock down. Shot clock under 5...a drive to the basket and a foul on Georgetown! That basket was not there either. What a break for St. John's with 34.9 to go.

4:32 PM: The first one is made the 2nd free throw is missed. 3-point game. Georgetown with a chance and there is a foul. They make both freebies. 1-point game. They foul a 64% shooter with 18.8 to go. We've got a thriller in the Garden.

4:34 PM: Both freebies are made. Back to a 3-point game. Timeout Hoyas with 15.3 to go in the game. 62-59 St. John's.

4:36 PM Freeman has it. To Mesherakov (don't correct my misspelling). HE LAUNCHES UP A 3 AND IT HITS THE BACK OF THE SUPPORT! OH MY! St. John's ball up 3 with 3 seconds to go!

4:39 PM: Roberts is fouled with 1.8 to go. If he makes a free throw, this one will be on ice. IT'S GOOD! The second one is in as well. 5-point game and #13 St. John's has beaten #12 Georgetown. That means that tomorrow at 2, it will be St. John's taking on Marquette.

Notre Dame vs. Rutgers

7:16 PM: Could it be? Could the overrated teams (Georgetown and Notre Dame) possibly go 0-for-2? Rutgers leads 9-6.

7:35 PM: Luke Harangody just made a long-range 2-point J to put the Irish up by 5 on the Scarlet Knights, 22-17.

7:47 PM: Big run for Notre Dame. 28-19, the Irish lead.

8:16 PM: Rutgers has battled back. They were within 1, although 2 freebies from the Irish have made it a 3-point lead.

8:27 PM: Big run by Notre Dame. They're now up by 13, 45-34 with 10:15 to go.

8:36 PM: Hold on a second! Here comes Rutgers! They're within 6! Oh damn, as I type this, Notre Dame sinks a three. And another basket. 53-42 Notre Dame.

8:46 PM: Everytime it seems like Rutgers is getting back into this game, Notre Dame gets a bucket or 2 and just takes all of their momentum away from them. 55-47 with 2:00 to go.

8:51 PM: 7-point game, under a minute to go. Rutgers has chance after chance after chance after chance to make a bucket yet they can't convert on any one of their plethora of rebounds in that span of 30 seconds. And now there's a steal by Notre Dame! JAM! THE IRISH WILL SURVIVE! Don't worry though, I have confidence that West Virginia will take care of them tomorrow.

8:56 PM: 61-50 Notre Dame has officially beaten Rutgers. Seton Hall-South Florida coming up in 20 minutes. And that's the game I have the least amount of interest in.

Seton Hall vs. South Florida

9:30 PM: Seton Hall has opened up a 13-6 lead on the Bulls to kick things off in this one. It is Syracuse so you do have to be wary, but I do not imagine them having any problems at all with the winner of this one.

9:53 PM: Seton Hall continues to lead, 25-17 is the current score over USF.

10:14 PM: The Big East really could not have had a lesser compelling game if they wanted to. It's halftime right now, and that's about all I know. I've hardly been following this game at all. I'll be back in a bit for more updates.

11:08 PM 1:45 to go and Seton Hall is still in the lead. Now it's 64-50 Pirates are in the lead. For any of you who have been watching (assuming such a person exists), has this game been as boring as advertised?

11:15 PM: That concludes the first round of the Big East tournament. Final score: 68-54 Seton Hall. Tomorrow the tourney moves to ESPN and I won't need to follow it on a computer. I will have an open thread up, although, I'll probably miss the Providence-DePaul game completely because I have so much going on in those 2 hours that the game is being played.

Tomorrow's matchups:
12:00 PM: Providence vs. DePaul (winner plays Louisville)
Approx. 2:00 PM: Marquette vs. St. John's (winner plays Villanova)
7:00 PM: West Virginia vs. Notre Dame (winner plays Pittsburgh)
Approx. 9:00 PM: Syracuse vs. Seton Hall (winner plays UConn).

I'll have more on the conference title games later.

Villanova vs. Notre Dame Live Blog

"And how about Digger's dancing the other day at Cal?" - Sean McDonough

Sorry about the delay. There was a troll at AA who has worn on my last nerve and it was just the time and the place to tell him off.

Notre Dame leads Villanova 32-29 with 1:00 to go in the 1st half.

STOKES FROM 3 TIES THE GAME AT 32!

It's been a back and forth game thus far with Notre Dame getting the early edge but Nova going on a run shortly afterwards and since then we have had more lead changes and ties in this first half then most games have.

Cunningham's shot is blocked and that's the end of the first half. Villanova is tied at 32 with Notre Dame.

If you want to read what I've been working on for the past 50 minutes, here's the link to check out. Hopefully we'll never hear of "San Diego Ken" again.

And now, here's the ESPN YouTube Video Of The Day.

Gotta love the PTI boys putting this in the Happy Trails portion of their show. Why is it happy trails, you ask? Loss of dignity. Sadly, this is not the first time though, that Digger has been caught busting a move.

Did I just see The Q-Tip? Good lord, Digger, get a life. And actually, while I'm thinking about it, get a dance lesson!

"This is my audtion tape for Dancing With The Stars." - Digger Phelps
"MAKE IT STOP!" - Rece Davis

I honestly don't know what was talked about more that halftime show? Basketball or a fan's video that captured Digger Phelps dancing. It's funny and all, but was there really need to spend an entire halftime show showing it and talking about it?

Thank goodness the 2nd half is starting soon...

"I hope you enjoyed that song from Bill Ratery's iPod." - Sean McDonough

Raft would have Saliva on his iPod. The 2nd half is underway and Nova has the ball. Bad turnover.

Nice shot my Harangody. It almost looked like he pulled a Tom Brady from his buttocks type deal.

"It's a little bit danger time for Notre Dame." - Jay Bilas

Err, Jay, it's a 3-point game with 16:53 to go. And now it's a 1-point game. Why couldn't it just be McDonough and Raft?

"You've seen enough short arms, haven't you, hanging around McDonough." - Bill Raftery

+1, my friend. If only ou can call every game possible.

39-39 at the media timeout.

Wait, someone who surely has a lot of money as this David Apernathe, buys his first car at 28?

"I think, what's interesting, is that the committee is looking for the 34 best teams." - Jay Bilas

Oh gee, really, I never knew that! Thank's for the insight, Jay!

Nice rebound by Harangody. And we've gone from "danger zone" to a 4-point lead for the Irish. REYNOLDS FROM 3! One-point lead.

Gotta love Scottie Reynolds! The Wildcats now lead by 2.

"Harangody dropped it in." - Sean McDonough

I got a really bad image from that. Timeout Notre Dame, as Harangody is exhausted and the Irish are short some players.

G-Town is done. They are only talking about them because they are in The Big East. (49er16)
Georgetown is in this discussion by name recognition and reputation. (SSR)

Villanova has the lead again! Up 51-50 over the Irish.

Aspeaking of overrated, Michigan State is a likely 2-seed. A Big 10 team is going to be a 2-seed!

53-50 at the media timeout.

Villanova now leads by 5 thanks to Shane Clark. Reynolds kicks it out to REDDING WHO MAY HAVE GIVEN US A DAGGER! 8-POINT LEAD! Timeout Notre Dame.

"I hate to see the season end, but I don't have to put up with McDonough anyomre. There are some blessings." - Bill Raftery

Ah, but Grandpa Verne is only 17 days away! Cunningham misses a fadeaway and an over the back foul by Redding on the rebound attempts.

REYNOLDS FROM 3 AND IT'S AN 11-POINT LEAD!

Finally, the Wildcats are playing like they should. Clark connects to bring the lead up to 13. 12-straight points for the Wildcats. Until now as Harangody makes a freebie.

He had a toenail on the ground? Jay Bilas says some weird things. (SSR)

Anderson dunks, but I'll admit, there may have been a foul there. Not that it matters. The Irish only have 6-players available, they're exhausted, and they are down by 16 with under 5 to go.

So ESPN is finally writing off Notre Dame? Yet they won't rule out Georgetown, who have a worst Big East record than the Irish.

Aires makes a 3 for the Irish! Down by 13 now and Nash is fouled.

67-54 with under 4 to go. The Wildcats are finally blowing out a team they are supposed to. REJOICE!

"Villanova when they get the ball, they gotta run some offense." - Jay Bilas

As opposed to defense? Yeah, I'd recommend rnning some offense when you have the ball as well.

SHANE CLARK CAPS A PERFECT CLOCK-MELTING POSSESSION WITH A 3! LEAD BY 16!

Back to 13. McAlarney from 3.

Well it's on to football for the Irish fans. Oh wait.... (49er16)

That comment just won the internets! The same can be said for Michigan, who thought they were all that when they beat Duke.

Wow, winningest Villanova senior class ever. Congrats to them!

Yeah, Villanova is getting all of the desparation bubble teams to conclude the season. I'll try to have a live blog for that Providence game.

18-point lead for the Wildcats with 1:30 to go and Jay Bilas is still trying to discuss strategy for the Irish. Get over it, Jay, the Irish are going to the NIT along with Georgetown. Actually I take that back, I think if the Irish make a run in the Big East tourney i.e. semifinals or better, they might get in. G-Town needs to win it outright, in my opinion. In other words, the Hoya's odds are the same as DePaul's.

Notre Dame, down 17 is not fouling with 25 seconds to go and that's it! The Villanova Wildcats may have just burst the bubble of Notre Dame, beating them 77-60!

Sorry for the delay, I was annoyed by a spammer. Thanks for joining me as the Wildcats still have an outside prayer of a double bye and the Irish may no longer have a prayer of The Big Dance. Thanks for joining me on this banner day at Fire Andy Reid Now! 6-posts in a day, that's a new record for me. And I may have a Houshamanilly post coming.
