Villanova Football To Join The Big East?

Villanova is a member of the Big East in every sport but one. Obviously that one sport is college football. Although with the Big East extending a formal invitation to the now perennial FCS title contender, that could all change for Villanova. From CSNPhilly.com.
Villanova says the Big East has informed the school it wants to add its football program to the conference.

The Wildcats compete in the Big East in all other varsity sports except football. Villanova won the FCS national championship last year and would move up to the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Villanova President Peter Donohue wrote a letter to Villanova alumni saying the university will evaluate the opportunity. There was no immediate comment from the Big East.

"This is a complicated issue with numerous, multi-dimensional factors that come into play, and it is important that we investigate scenarios related to making -- or not making -- such a move," Donohue wrote.

The Philadelphia Daily News reported Friday that the conference was interested in Villanova.

Donohue did not say when the program would make a decision, but it won't be until the board of trustees "conducts a careful and complete analysis" of all the factors. Among the decisions would include upgrading their football stadium or finding somewhere else to play.
For Villanova, this should hopefully be a no-brainer. For the Big East, this is clearly an act of desperation. It is no secret that the Big East is the laughing stock of the BCS football conferences and they want to do whatever they can to try and change things. Now Villanova football is unlikely to change that. All season long, they drew a mere 52,717 fans in attendance. That is not a per game basis, that is a season total at their home stadium. That being said, if you are Villanova, you could do wonders for your program by moving straight from the FCS to the BCS. Granted, they are not going to turn into a BCS national championship contender overnight, that is at least a good 10 years down the road from now, but if you are given the opportunity to jump from the FCS to the BCS, wouldn't you take it? Then again, unless Big East football can make a big move and grab a big name (*cough*cough*NotreDame*cough*cough), the odds that the Big East is a BCS conference in 10 years is probably sitting at quite slim right about now.

Is it just me or is it amusing that Bob Griese and Brian Griese will be calling games at the same time on a weekly basis? Also, Pam Ward has been (seemingly) demoted to the ESPNU afternoon game while Bob Wischusen is promoted in her place. Also, who on earth does Ron Franklin think he is? Brett Favre? I could have swore he retired last year....

Forget 2007, This Was The Best Fiesta Bowl Ever

Congrats to the Boise State Broncos for winning the 2010 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in a very thrilling fashion. A fake punt in that situation took guts (especially that call of a the punter throwing a pass). If it fails and TCU goes on to win, Chris Peterson is no doubt the biggest idiot in Idaho, but because it succeeded, Chris Peterson is once again considered a genius as he should be, because even with Boise's Fiesta Bowl reputation, TCU never saw that play coming.

That fake punt led to the game-winning touchdown later on that drive.

But enough of the game and on to what made this the best Fiesta Bowl ever. Though I'm not sure if that is something you should tell this Boise State cowgirl soon to be internet star.

And is it just me, or is a guy named Johnson majoring in cummunication the best person ever?

Best. Typo. Ever.

Once again, Boise State has won the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Can you believe it?

Presenting A True Division I College Football National Champion, The Villanova Wildcats!

Andy Talley's bunch did it! They went down to rainy Chattanooga and put up over 350 yards on the ground to win a hard-fought, hard-nosed championship game, the 3rd championship game won by a Philadelphia team in the past year and a half.

The final score of the game was 23-21 Nova and while there were no real dramatics at the end (Montana got in the last 2 minutes to make the score a bit more respectible but failed to recover the onside kick eventually ending it with 1 more Nova 1st down), here are the final seconds of the game as called by Eric Collins and Brock Huard.

If you thought that call was bad, you should have heard Eric Collins' "V is for Victory and V is for Villanova" call that he did before that when he thought the game was over but there was a random stoppage holding up the final 30 seconds.

The Villanova Wildcats now join the Philadelphia Soul and the Philadelphia Phillies as Philly teams winning a championship this past year and a half. And now, it's up to the Eagles and then Jay Wright's Villanova basketball team (no longer unbeaten after losing to Big Five rival Temple) to bring home some more hardware to the City of Brotherly Love.

GO NOVA!!!

We finally have all of the information needed to put together a full and complete list of the bowl games and their announcers. With the exception of the sideline reporters for the BCS games (and who gives a shit about sideline reporters), we know where everyone will be and what games they will be doing. If you're a Penn State fan, you'll be happy to know that former PSU star Todd Blackledge will be on the mic analyzing in Orlando for the Capital One Bowl which will feature Penn State (WE ARE!!!) taking on LSU (WHAT ARE THEY THINKING? MY GOSH!). But I'm getting ahead of myself, we will start this year with the epic New Mexico Bowl! Okay, so Fresno State and Wyoming isn't exactly epic, but you get my point. Then again, some of the scenery you get during that game is beautiful.....

January 7
BCS National Championship Game: Alabama vs. Texas 8:00 (ABC - Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit, SR: Lisa Salters and Tom Rinaldi)

While there are some throwaway games, there are certainly some interesting ones up there as well. And once again, it figures that Pammy gets the worst and most useless bowl game that there is. She just can't catch a break, now can she?

Do take note though of that AutoZone LIberty Bowl as that will be the last football game ever called by the great Ron Franklin. Too bad ECU had to ruin it by beating Houston in the C-USA title game, as Houston vs. Arkansas would have been awesome. But ECU may not be such a bad game either. We'll see.

To a great career, Ron Franklin, and to learning your lesson about making slightly suggestive and rude comments to Holly Rowe.

College Football Announcing Schedule Week 14

Seeing as this is the biggest week in college football (and personally my favorite), I decided to put up the announcing schedule even though AA will surely do the same later in the week. Besides, I have a somewhat funny situation that I want to bring up. (all times eastern)

Thursday December 3

PAC-10 Championship: Oregon State @ Oregon 9:00 (ESPN - Chris Fowler, Craig James, and Jesse Palmer, SR: Erin Andrews)

Friday December 4

MAC Championship: Central Michigan vs. Ohio 8:00 (ESPN2 - Joe Tessitore and Rod Gilmore)

Saturday December 5

Big East Championship: Cincinnati @ Pittsburgh 12:00 (ABC - Sean McDonough and Matt Millen, SR: Holly Rowe)
West Virginia @ Rutgers 12:00 (ESPN - Dave Pasch, Bob Griese, and Chris Spielman)
Conference USA Championship: Houston @ East Carolina 12:00 (ESPN2 - Ron Franklin and Ed Cunningham)
Fresno State @ Illinois 12:30 (BTN - Wayne Larrivee and Chris Martin, SR: Charissa Thompson)
San Jose State @ Louisiana Tech 2:00 (ESPN+ - Trey Bender and Jay Taylor) (Will Air on CST and MASN)
New Mexico State @ Boise State 3:00 (KTVB - Mark Johnson and Tom Scott, SR: Justin Corr)
Arizona @ USC 3:30 (ABC - Mike Patrick and Craig James, SR: Heather Cox)
SEC Championship: Florida vs. Alabama 4:00 (CBS - Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson, SR: Tracy Wolfson)
California @ Washington 6:30 (CSN California+ - Jim Kozimor and Mike Pawlaski, SR: Christine Nubla) (FSN Washington - Tom Glasgow and Mack Strong, SR: Jen Mueller)
Big XII Championship: Nebraksa vs. Texas 8:00 (ABC - Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit, SR: Lisa Salters)
ACC Championship: Georgia Tech vs. Clemson 8:00 (ESPN - Brad Nessler and Todd Blackledge, SR: Erin Andrews)
South Florida @ Connecticut 8:00 (ESPN2 - Mark Jones and Bob Davie)
Wisconsin @ Hawaii 11:30 (ESPN2 - Terry Gannon and David Norrie)

Saturday December 12

Army vs. Navy 2:30 (CBS - Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson, SR: Tracy Wolfson)

The point I want to make is that the Army-Navy game was pushed back this year and everyone was hailing how this is the way things should be. Well, we have a problem. Army is 5-6. They do not play again until the Army-Navy game. If they win, they will be bowl eligible and in the EagleBank Bowl. If they lose, they will not be bowl eligible. Therefore, we will not know the EagleBank Bowl until 7 days after all the other bowls are announced. While it is initially scheduled for ACC #8 to take on C-USA or Army, the ACC won't be getting an 8th team so chances are that game will be C-USA vs. Army or if Army loses, a MAC team.

It's amazing how even when college football decided to do something right it ends up going wrong. Incredible.

Pete Carroll Is Not A Fan Of You Calling A Timeout When He Is Taking A Knee

With 50 seconds left and down by 14 points, UCLA failed to convert a 4th down thus sealing a 21-7 victory for USC. As Matt Barkley took his first knee, Rick Neuheisel called a timeout perhaps to fight to the last whistle for his kids or just to get under the skin of Pete Carroll. If the latter was the case, then mission accomplished. While the timeout is not on the video, Carroll's response to that timeout and the aftermath of it all is.

Simply classless. While I can see the justification for the timeout, Carroll had no business throwing that hail mary TD pass to rub it in or what not especially after he cried foul when Jim Harbaugh and Stanford did the exact same thing to him. What a classless hypocrite Carroll is.

And then UCLA took it far by marching out on the field like that and while my amygdala would have enjoyed a good SoCal brawl, it would have been a black mark on college football that never would have been forgotten and forever looked down upon.

Oh well. All I can tell USC, USC fans, and Pete Carroll is have a fun trip to the Emerald Bowl! May the Emerald Nuts be extra nutty for you guys. Or something.

Your Division I FCS First Round Schedule

I have nothing to do today so I have decided to make this college football day here at FARN!. I've already got the Week 13 schedule up for the FBS, and now I will put up the FCS Schedule. Why am I doing this, you ask? Because it is the first round of a college football playoffs, that's why! I am hoping that NCAA.com will do what they have done in the past for lesser sporting events and put up at the very least a radio stream so I can follow the games, especially seeing as one of the participants just so happens to be my Villanova Wildcats. In fact, the 'Cats are the 2nd highest seeded team in the whole tournament. All first round games are on this Saturday, so I encourage you to sit back, relax, and enjoy and now without further ado, here is your schedule! (all times PM eastern)

Holy Cross @ Villanova 12:00
South Carolina State @ Appalachian State 12:00
Weber State @ William & Mary 1:00
Elon @ Richmond 1:00
South Dakota State @ Montana 2:00
Eastern Illinois @ Southern Illinois 2:00
New Hampshire @ McNeese State 3:00
Eastern Washington @ Stephen F. Austin 3:00

You can click here to check out the brackets if you want to. Even if you are not familiar with any of these football teams, one thing is for sure, there is nothing more exciting than a win or go home playoff football game, regardless of the level of play.

Your College Football Week 13 Announcing Schedule

AA must be taking an early Thanksgiving break. Seeing as he has not put up the Week 13 college football announcing schedule, I'll put one up instead. I know I don't get his traffic, but it will give Keith something to link to and myself something to refer to instead of navigating the506 forums and the constantly moving threads. (all times eastern)

What are they doing, turning Pammy into an ACC announcer? I know there are no Big 10 games this week, but this seems like the umpteenth week in a row she has worked an ACC game.

And just as an aside, I am surprised to see Chris Spielman back in the booth already. He'll certainly be there with a heavy heart, but I am sure that Stefanie would have wanted him to move on and I guess we can't grieve forever, right?

For those curious like I was, the Oregon-Oregon State PAC-10 Championship game is Thursday, December 3. For sure, that will be one heck of a huge football game.

Saturday, November 21, 2009

"WHAT ARE THEY DOING??" " MY GOSH!!"

Wow. Ever since crapping the bed against the Chargers, Andy Reid has seriously, thorough no doing of his own, had the best week ever. First Bill Belichick's infamous 4th down call inside his own territory against Indy that cost the Pats the game, and now, believe it or not, Les Miles has successfully trumped that idiocy!

So here is the situation. It is 3rd and 19. LSU attempts a screen pass that gets blown up for a loss of 7 setting up 4th and 26 with 26 seconds left. Les Miles then inexplicably lets the clock wind down to 9 seconds before calling LSU's final timeout. What happens next is simply unbelieveable. And the call by Verne Lundquist one of the funniest end-of-game calls you will ever hear.

Really??? Spike the ball with 1 second left??? How dumb can you be? That FG may not be guaranteed to be off in time, but you have to have them ready to run out there so they can at least have the chance. The wasting of the clock after 3rd down before the last timeout, the not having your FG team ready in case of a 4th down completion for a 1st down and not a touchdown, as what happened, and then spiking the ball with 1 second left is completely hilarious.

That "MY GOSH!" may become my new phrase in the live blog whenever I'm pissed off at Andy Reid. Unbelieveable. That may be the funniest end of a game I have ever seen.

UConn Wins One For Jazz

After 3 excruciatingly rough losses following the loss of their teammate Jasper Howard, UConn finally won a game and they did so on the biggest of scales. It was not easy though. With a chance to win it in regulation, Notre Dame fumbled the ball and UConn recovered it. A big Dixon gain put them in field goal range. However, the FG with 3 seconds left was shanked and it went to overtime. After trading touchdowns in the first OT, UConn was able to hold ND to a field goal in the 2nd overtime. UConn then got the ball and a chance to respond. This was for Jazz.

Simply an incredible finish and while that may be the end of Charlie Weis' tenure in South Bend, the story of the day and of the game has to be UConn, finally winning a game since the death of Jasper Howard. Despite the tough last-second losses the past 3 games, they never gave up. Despite missing a game-winning field goal, they never gave up. And they persevered. And finally tonight, they prevailed. That is what heart is all about. Congrats to UConn. They deversve it.

As does Notre Dame. They deserve this as well.

FYI, as soon as the Randy Edsell interview is up on YouTube, I'll add it as an update. It will put a smile on your face and maybe even a lump in your throat.

Update: Here's a local news broadcast showing highlights of the game with an abridged version of the Edsell interview, but it's better than nothing, I guess. If the full version comes up, I will surely put that here instead.

Lou Holtz Explains Why They Call Him Dr. Lou; Makes No Sense In The Process

We all know that Lou Holtz is picking Notre Dame to make it to the championship game, but now, seconds after Sean Hannity declared that he would think about running for office, Lou Holtz decides that that is the best time in the world to talk about being called an "idiot" and why he is called Dr. Lou. From TV Newser

Ah, good times! I do not quite understand why Sean Hannity insists on having Lou Holtz on his show (this is not the first time Holtz has been on), but whenever he does, it's pure comedy gold. Forget Sean Hannity, what if Lou Holtz decided to run for Congress or the Presidency? You know, Holtz for public office might be the single force that systematically destroys this great nation.......

Husky Barks: D-II Pre-Season Polls Released

The statement that my last post would be the last for the weekend did not take into account the fact that the D-II pre-season polls might be released today. Football season is right around the corner (believe it or not), and the D-II pre-season polls have been released. After last year's quarterfinal run, the Huskies are currently ranked #7 in the nation. And after a heart-breaking loss in the 2008 D-II National quarterfinals, I am hoping that my Huskies have what it takes to mke it to the National Semifinals, get on national TV, and maybe win the whole sha-bang. The best part about being a BU student and a fan of football, is that with my student ID, I get into the home games at beautiful Redman Stadium (complete with a mountain backdrop and the same kind of artificial turf that can be found at NFL Stadiums such as the Georgia Dome) absolutely free. It's so awesome and the stadium is so beautiful, and seeing as I don't normally get to Eagles games (actually, I've never been to a game at the Linc), this is the only time that I can see football live and I love it. And as more or less a creature of the night, I must say, I am digging the high number of late games. Sports under the lights is so much more special, dramatic, and fun than games during the day.

Husky Barks will become a more regular segment once football season begins as I will be watching our team very closely as BU looks to achieve the dream of every D-II school: having Pam Ward on your campus to call a National Semifinal game! Oh, and something about winning a national championship as well.

The Temple Owls Should Be BCS National Champions!!! This is an outrage!!!

What? You think I'm kidding? Then check this out.

"Temple (5-7)

Temple beat Army on 08/29/2008 by a score of 35-7 (on the road!)
Army beat Louisiana Tech on 10/25/2008 by a score of 14-7
Louisiana Tech beat Mississippi State on 08/30/2008 by a score of 22-14
Mississippi State beat Vanderbilt on 10/11/2008 by a score of 17-14
Vanderbilt beat Mississippi on 09/20/2008 by a score of 23-17 (on the road!)
Mississippi beat Florida on 09/27/2008 by a score of 31-30 (on the road!)
Florida is the 2008 Div 1-A champion

So ... Temple was the best Div 1-A school for the 2008 college football season"

No arguing that logic, that's for sure! This is an outrage! This is a scandal! Robbery the likes of this have never before been seen in the history of college football! How could the BCS deprive this team the national championship??? This is disgusting!

Do realize that that above paragraph was sarcastic. In a way, at least. Using this method, the Transitive Property, everybody in the FBS has a legitimate case to be national champions, unless you're Washington, Washington State, Southern Medhodist, North Texas, and Western Kentucky. Click on the link below, select your college, hit go, and let the rage go through your vains as now there is mathematical proof that your team does indeed deserve to be national champions!

On the BCS (To Be Read Like A Keith Olbermann Special Comment)

This is nothing NFL related, yet I yearn for a place to express my feelings on the BCS. And this is the place. And now is the time.

Look at the situation. Look at what happened on Thursday, Friday, and Monday. Look at what happened in the Fiesta Bowl. Look at what happened in the Sugar Bowl. Look at what happened in the Rose Bowl. Look at what's happening in college football.

In what may be the biggest controversy in college football since the exclusion of Auburn in 2004, there are currently 5 teams with a legitimate case that they should be national champions. And while that number will become 4 after the "National Championship Game" when either Florida or Oklahoma lose, you still have one huge can of worms. And this can of worms, regardless of tomorrow's outcome, whether it be a 45-10 blowout or a 38-35 thriller decided in triple overtime, this can of worms will not go away.

Just look at who has a legitimate case. We'll start out with the team that should be playing in the national championship in the first place, Texas! We all remember what happened in Dallas, that one fateful afternoon when Texas beat Oklahoma 45-35 and yet somehow, someway, by running up the score on Texas Tech and Mizzou, Oklahoma is in the national championship. What kind of message is this sending? That if you run up the score and be poor sports that you can get your way? There is a difference between blowing a team out and sending a message, which is fine, but when it becomes a 40-point game in the 4th quarter and you're still trying to score, isn't that a little bit much? Hasn't the point already been made? But yet, it seems like the more I think about it, the more those garbage touchdowns have mattered more and more.

The BCS prides itself in a regular season where every game matters. I disagree. I disagree vehemently. It's not if you lose, it's when you lose that matters. It's rare these days that a team from a "major BCS conference" goes unbeaten through the regular season. It is possible that a team can lay an absolute turd week 1, get blown out 45-o and go undefeated the rest of the way and make the national championship. And yet, if a team goes undefeated for their first 11 games, lose their final game by a score 45-0 that team has absolutely no chance of making it to the national championship. How fair is that? Despite everyone in the BCS claiming that they look at the whole body of work, it's not. It's a "what have you done for me lately" system. And by "what have you done for me lately" it's what did you do in the last 2 weeks. And just to slam the point home, look at the final BCS standings.

1. Oklahoma (lost October 11)
3. Texas (lost November 1)
7. Texas Tech (lost November 22)

Notice a pattern here? Now imagine this. What if the Texas-OU game was later on in the season? What if that was the last Big 12 south game of the season? What if the score remained the same? Texas is playing Florida in the national championship game. Colt McCoy is the Heisman Tropny winner. In other words, the entire landscape of college football would be different.

And that's just the argument for one team! Let's move on to USC. The Trojans have one of the best defenses in the history of college football. They beat PSU in the Rose Bowl by a deceptively close score of 38-24. They bashed the Nittany Lions, the Big 10 champions and say what you will about the Big 10, Penn State under JoePa is a damn good football team and USC mopped the floor with them. And look at who they lost to, Oregon State. At the time it was "haha, USC lost to weak Oregon State", but look at Oregon State now! They are a ranked team and they beat Pitt in an, albeit unentertaining, Sun Bowl. USC is more than capable of putting a beat down on Florida and Oklahoma. USC is more than deserving of a national championship.

And lastly, Utah. Whatever happened to going undefeated? Apparently you only get in the national championship game in the FBS if you're undefeated and you play in a major conference. Of course the BCS absolutely ignores the Mountain West Conference. Who cares? Even if they are a BCS conference. They are not a major money maker for them. Therefore, they are shunned away. Forgotten about. Oh, they have an undefeated team? Ah, put them in the Sugar Bowl against Alabama and they'll get blown out. Oh, that Sugar Bowl was a blowout all right. 31-17. Utah beat Alabama. They have more than proven their worth. They beat 4 ranked teams this year. What more can you ask for? What more can they do? How fair is it that a team goes undefeated and is not credited with being a national champion? No matter the outcome of tomorrow night's championship game, one fact will remain the same, Utah is the best damn team in the nation and there's not a damn thing Florida and Oklahoma can do to change it! Oh, what about the rest of their schedule? Can you seriously consider a team that plays Weber State to be a national champion? To which, I quite ask the person who asks that question....what drugs are you taking? YES! You can! Why? It's simple. Look at Florida's schedule. Look at who they played? Notice anything. Wait, what's that? They played The Citadel? Yeah, that's right. Florida played The Citadel! The Goddamn Mother Fucking Citadel of The FCS! (pardon my French, s'il vous plait). So, according to you ignorant people who feels Utah should not be a national championship because they had Weber State on their schedule, surely you must feel the same way about Florida....

The bottom line is everybody has weak teams on their schedule. UT-Chattanooga, Baylor played Oklahoma. Should they be discredited then for playing such weak teams? The answer is a simple no. Utah is the best team in the nation. They beat a damn fine TCU team who more than proved there worth in the Poinsettia Bowl. They beat another solid BYU team. And then there was the Sugar Bowl. 31-17. That's the new rallying cry. 31-17! 31-17! 31-17! 31-17!.....

But alas, the BCS does not care. They don't care about the kids. They care about money. Florida and Oklahoma would make more money than a national championship involving Utah. It would be more appealing to a casual fan. There's no doubt about it. But what satisfies those qualities is not always right. In fact, it hardly ever is.

And maybe it's a blessing in disguise that Fox is covering the BCS. They're crappy production has in part helped to drive the BCS ratings into the ground. And maybe once driven completely into the ground. The ashes that rise up will be that of a new system. One where every FBS team gets treated fairly, regardless of conference. And I'm not totally against having bowl games. I would not get rid of the Bowl system, I'd keep the bowls, as they are a good and fun reward for teams not in the Top 8 to play one more game, show off some hidden talent to the country, and entertain us in the process. And then the top 8 teams in the country, regardless of conference, would use the BCS bowl game sites as a site for the quarterfinals of a playoffs (i.e. the Orange Bowl would be a quarterfinal game, the Rose Bowl another, etc.). Wouldn't that make everyone happy?

But then does that not diminish the importance of the regular season? No! It does not. Every game is still important. But there will still be snubs? Yes, there will be. But isn't it easier to snub a 2-loss team or a 1-loss team that got beaten badly by a sub-.500 team than it is undefeated Utah, Texas, and dominant USC?

But as long as the people in the BCS have any say, that will never happen. They are too blinded with greed to see their own greed. They are too obnoxious to realize their own obnoxiousness. Maybe this will finally snap them out of it. Chances are, they will most likely look at Texas, Utah, and USC and just put there nose in the air and say "hmph! I don't care about you". That would not be any different than what they have been doing all year and to teams like Boise State two-years ago and Auburn in 2004.

I, like most college football fans will watch the national title game. Not because I like laughing at Fox's band shots, not because I want to listen to Thom Brennaman and Charles Davis (and his Mangina), not because I want to see who the best team in America is (that honor for this year belongs to the Utes of Utah), but because of two reasons. A). I want to see two good teams play what should be an entertaining game. And B). I want to say I witnessed history when the shit hits the fan with the BCS.

And all the while, in my head, one thing sticks out in my mind above all else. 31-17......31-17.......31-17.....There it is, BCS. Your true national champions. Utah Utes.

Good night and good luck.
