Despite the fact that it appears that I am here online, I really am not. Even though you are seeing it now, at 1:00 PM ET, it is actually 12:54 AM ET and I am currently stuck in the hell hole known as the place that I work and chances are I am currently filing legal papers and am nowhere near a computer. Regardless, today is a big day for the sports world and should be one entertaining day. Therefore, even though I may only be here in the evening, I am setting up this open thread for not only do we have the United States looking to win it's first game ever at Estadio Azteca, but Pedro Martinez is making his pitching debut for the Phillies on ESPN. Yep, that's right, it's Pedro Martinez of the Philadelphia Phillies starting against former Notre Dame wide receiver Jeff Samardzija of the Chicago Cubs. Now there's a statement that 3 years ago I never thought I would say.
Your Mexico-U.S. soccer game will be on mun2 at 4:00 PM ET with Phil Schoen and Marcelo Balboa doing commentary.
Your Phils-Cubs baseball game will be on ESPN at 8:00 PM ET with (ironically, considering the above event and analyst) Dave O'Brien and Rick Sutcliffe on commentary.
Use this thread to document the action, leave Marcelo Balboa quotes, discuss the games, or just to scream "HOLY SHIT!" when something unbelieveable happens. Have a great time and maybe once I finish watching the United States and Mexico from my DVR without reading spoilers here, I'll join in for some convos about Martinez and Samardzija. This will (almost) be like the 2006 World Cup all over again; good times! Enjoy the games and leave comments!
Update: It may be poor quality and in Spanish, but for those that are not being fed mun2 and/or are watching baseball at this moment, here are your 1st half goals.
Update 2: For those who missed it, here is the game-winning goal for Mexico. And apparently it's brought to you by Piss Water, er, I mean Corona Beer. Yeah, that's it.
i had to laugh at that story about the Eagles having to use an intern to take QB reps. what is going on up there at Lehigh?
ReplyDeleteNo Mun2 on Comcast.
ReplyDeleteThey are officially douchenozzles. BTW, Phils game also on WGN America, thus pissing off ESPN to the hilt.
That's where JFein is today. He's taking snaps for the Eagles.
ReplyDeleteRight you are Keith. In fact, I might see some snaps tomorrow at New England.
ReplyDeleteI had to come home early because of a brief emergency.
Phil: "for those of you around the world who think 77 degrees isn't hot, you gotta remember; we're 7,000 feet closer to the sun"
ReplyDeletethis is going to be a long 2 hours with gems like this...
"For all those people that don't think that 77 degrees is that hot, you're 7,000 feet closer to the sun." - Phil Schoen
ReplyDeleteWell, relatively speaking, 7,000 feet is nothing, but having been in high altitude areas before, I can atest to the fact that 77 degrees does feel warmer when you're at that altitude and you can feel the sun beating down on you any more.
phil: "listening to national anthem can be both a thrill and an adventure"
ReplyDeleteand i like how the Mexicans salute their hearts...
what exactly is a sports instructor? and how can i get that kind of gig?
ReplyDeleteand we're on
Who is this Charlie Davis, Marcelo Balboa? You must mean Charlie Davies
ReplyDeletePhil Schoen sounds eerily similar to Ian Eagle
ReplyDeleteIan Eagle >>>>> Phil Schoen
ReplyDeleteAnd how many more times does Marcelo plan on mentioning altitude, smog, and over 100,000 people?
gotta love the NBCUni synergy...truly historic in making sure many fans who wanted to watch this match can't...
ReplyDeleteTHESE FUCKING UMPIRES IN THE DODGERS-GIANTS SERIES HAVE BEEN FUCKING HORRIBLE. THEY HAVE BLOWN ONE CALL AFTER THE OTHER.
ReplyDeletei agree with you 4:10 JFein...
ReplyDeleteand Phil..why in the hell would the USA team be showing fear???
Davies GOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!
Schoen and Balboa are all over the place and contradicting themselves like mad.
ReplyDeleteDAVIES SCORES!!!! 1-0 USA!!!!!
and Phil has a heart attack!
ReplyDelete1-0 U-S-A!
Phil: "they got their goal at the nacho time"
ReplyDeletewhat?
Right you are, kt @ 4:11.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, that call was something else. I'll be perusing YouTube in a few minutes to see if someone put up the video....
You guys should find a link to watch this Dodgers-Giants game.
ReplyDeleteThis game could have a Red Sox-Tigers moment coming real soon.
Marcelo is bragging about the game in 97 when they took the crowd out of the game early with a goal. How did that end up?
ReplyDeleteAnd what is it with the random throws to the Telemundo people and the studio host, Guadeloupe (or however you spell his name).
As far as those umpires go, 49er16, welcome to the Phils' world. We've experienced awful umpiring quite a bit this year.
ReplyDeleteYou gotta let us know if something actually happens, Keith.
@ JFein 4:18....2 hours to plug everyone on the network?
ReplyDeletethe umps suck..they cost the O's 2 runs in todays game...
ReplyDelete/doesn't matter because the Orioles lost by 3
Mexico ties it 1-1 on a bomb
ReplyDeleteNot much Howard could have done about that one.
ReplyDeleteare you going to live-blog the best of mun2 before the Phillies game, JFein?
ReplyDelete"The best of mun2 might be on display right now." - Phil Schoen after yet another random throw to Guadeloupe to promote the promos to mun2 shows after the game.
ReplyDeleteUm........no.
ReplyDeleteand now Oneywu's out v El Salvador
ReplyDeletesomeone broke the internet...
ReplyDeleteTHE SKY IS FALLING!
ReplyDeleteBENGIE MOLINA TOOK A WALK!
I see I was not the only one having problems commenting. Still 1-1.
ReplyDelete49er16 @4:39
ReplyDeleteits about as rare as a Jose Molina homer
Mexico seems to be a tad bit stronger than the U.S. at this stage of the game.
ReplyDeletenad Phil after praising the ref in the pregame is now ripping him blind..its CONCACAF... the US never gets any calls.
ReplyDelete"In this kind of altitude and smog." - Marcelo Balboa
ReplyDeleteDRINK!
For the 4th time this half, it's Guadeloupe!
ReplyDeleteDRINK!!!
you're right JFein..who the hell names their kid Guadeloupe?
ReplyDeleteWe've only had an hour's worth of broadcast for this game, yet we've gotten enough ridiculousness to create a drinking game that would have most grown men completely passed out in 5 minutes.
ReplyDeleteHAHA....... A Dodgers cameraman is wearing a Phillies hat.
ReplyDelete/fuck the dodgers
and how many times will Marcelo talk about 97?
ReplyDelete"3rd defender for the U.S. now carrying plastic." - Phil Schoen after the Bocanegra yellow card.
ReplyDelete1-1 at halftime.
Phil after a yellow to Bocanegra: "some will say the US needs to act better"
ReplyDeleteare these guys like Nantz wearing flag pins?
"the uniquely American Mundos?" quite a slogan
MVP??? Good grief, Mun2 is really pulling out all the stops for this one.
ReplyDeleteGuadalupe = Sal Masakela
ReplyDelete"We're the uniquely American network." - Crash
ReplyDeleteBecause no other network or channel is uniquely American. Oy ve.
And Guadelupe scares me greatly.
+1 for the women in "Chicas Project"
ReplyDeleteAnd for those of you at Comcast...
ReplyDeleteTHAT'S FOR NOT PICKING UP MUN2, MOTHERFUCKING COCKSUCKERS!
JFein @4:55
ReplyDeletenever trust anyone with a single name...
and is Phil packing away Krispy Kremes whem Marcelo is blabbering away?
We are getting dominated in the midfield. How we are tied is beyond me.
ReplyDeleteComcast Seattle has Mun2...I lasted 4 minutes with Balboa and switched to Telemundo.
which is it Phil.. the ref sucks or he's great?
ReplyDeleteI'm still going. Mainly because I'm pretty sure this broadcast will be one of our punchlines for quite some time.
ReplyDeleteSchoen and Balboa just spent 5 minutes whining about the officiating.
oh and i liked the time Marcelo called Charlie "Michael Davies"...in homage to the EP of WWTBAM?
ReplyDeleteIt may be poor quality and in Spanish, but I found a highlights package of the 1st half for those like JC that are not being fed mun2. I'll search for better once the game is over including any and all 2nd half highlighgs.
ReplyDeleteSchoen completely lost his mind with the U.S. goal. I'm looking for a YouTube video with the mun2 broadcast of that goal but no such luck yet. And the one I did find was cut off right before the scream.
did Phil really just call Bob Bradley, Bruce Arena?
ReplyDelete1st half goals are up! Just click refresh and you'll catch up on what you missed.
ReplyDeleteAmazing. Truly astounding.
ReplyDeleteWe can't string 5 passes together.
ReplyDeleteThis one's for everyone in Philadelphia!
ReplyDeleteFIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteTURN IT TO THE GIANTS GAME!
THIS IS BULLSHIT! THE UMP TOSSED SANDOVAL AND HE WAS THE ONE WHO WAS HIT BY THE PITCH!
ReplyDeleteWHEW! THEY DIDN'T TOSS SANDOVAL.
ReplyDelete/FUCK THESE UMPS THOUGH
Ah, good times, everyone!
ReplyDeleteAnd right you are, JC. That's just reason #345 why DirecTV > Comcast.
Umps have sucked this year. Period.
@Mookie: You sure that Comcast has mun2 in Seattle?
ReplyDeleteOh boy Vela is in.....he torched us last time in the Gold Cup.
ReplyDeleteOT: Hank and Kendra found out the sex of the baby. Only problem is the answer to the question is a broken link stemming from Kendra's Twitter account.
ReplyDeleteYes I'm sure James....I checked and it works fine. Channel 603 I think.
ReplyDeleteAnd Andres Cantor really pissed and shit in his pants when Mexico scored...
ReplyDeleteNot here in Philly, hence the link to that picture on my blog...
ReplyDeleteClark is out and Holden is in.
ReplyDeleteAnd the Sons of Ben are extremely pissed over at BigSoccer.com about Comcast in that region sitting on their asses doing nothing...
ReplyDelete"We said that sooner or later Tim Howard would have to come up with an unstoppable stop, and he just did right there." - Phil Schoen making no sense.
ReplyDeleteHolden...stupid substitution.
ReplyDeleteHOWARD!!
Meanwhile, I said that the Comcast people were douchenozzles, and we should storm the building at 17th and JFK a la Le Bastille...
ReplyDelete"This time Morena swallows the whistle." - Phil Schoen
ReplyDeleteThat throw to the Armed Forces Network reminded me that we have not heard from Guadelupe this half...
*Morneo
ReplyDeleteGUADELUPE! DRINK!
ReplyDeleteWhy did I say anything?????
GUADALUPE! DRINK!
ReplyDeleteOnyewu should get Man of the Match.
ReplyDeleteTHIS UMPIRE CREW SUCKS BALLS!
ReplyDeleteBTW, Cubs-Phils are on CSN here in Philly, WGN and WGN America (pissing ESPN off BTW), and ESPNEWS in Philly and Chi-Town.
ReplyDeleteOkay, If I was Commissioner of Baseball, WGN America would carry NO GAMES OF THE CUBS OR WHITE SOX to protect ESPN and TBS.
Anyone notice that this year, FIFA is allowing six aubs per match out of seven available players?
ReplyDeleteOr in English, six subs...
ReplyDeleteWhat a chance for Davies! Wow! So close for the U.S.A.!
ReplyDeletei'll take Kasper-Brenly over O'Brien-Sutcliffe anyday of the week
ReplyDeleteand Davies just missed...
wow..Davies just offside
ReplyDeleteJust offsides! U.S.A. may have a second wind now.
ReplyDelete@ JC: Only for Sunday Night Baseball does ESPN not have to deal with the problem of local broadcasts. I'm not sure why that is, but it is. At least in this area.
ReplyDeleteI SWEAR TO CHRIST THAT I'M GOING TO KILL JUAN URIBE. HE'S LEFT 7 RUNNERS ON BASE TODAY!!!!!!!!
ReplyDelete/FUCK THE DODGERS
//FUCK VIN SCULLY
///FUCK RUSSELL MARTIN
FIGHT IN MEXICO CITY!
ReplyDeleteand some shoving...lets see some yellow on Mexico....
ReplyDeleteFIGHT!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAltidore is in...last US sub
ReplyDeleteAltidore is in for the U.S. for Davies.
ReplyDelete"If he can get in behind good balls." - Marcelo Balboa
ReplyDeleteLater.....
"We still don't know who's going to win." - Phil Schoen
THANK YOU CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!
To which Guadelupe stupidly agreed.
He agreed with Schoen, not me, just to clarify. Then again, if you've seen Guadelupe at all today, you'd instantly understand that.
ReplyDeletethe Mexicans lead 2-1
ReplyDelete2-1 Mexico. The Gold Cup hero did it again in the 83rd minute.
ReplyDeleteBob Bradley looks shocked...again, gotta love the soldiers w/ the Mexican flag in Iraq
ReplyDeletei despise that Bob Bradley "what in the world just happened look?"
ReplyDeleteU.S. corner kick in the 88th minute.
ReplyDeleteUSA has a corner coming...
ReplyDeleteAnd those classy Mexican fanaticos throw cans of Red Bull at Donovan on the corner.
ReplyDeleteStay Classy, You Asshats/wipes/holes...
Mexico wins it 2-1.
ReplyDeleteMexico wins, 2-1 and Contor pisses/shits in his pants yet again. GET THE MAN A FRICKIN' DIAPER!
ReplyDelete@JC, I saw that.
ReplyDeleteI work with a few Mexicans and they are both rooting for the Dodgers and Mexico. I wish I had the power to deport them.
FIRE BOB!
ReplyDeleteTHIS GIANTS GAME HAS ME SO PISSED OFF RIGHT NOW
ReplyDeleteHank and Kendra are having a baby boy!!!!!
ReplyDeleteKendra's happy!
In all seriousness, congrats to Hank and Kendra and if I understand the article correctly, we will meet this baby boy for the 1st time in December around Christmas time.
First, Marcelo Balboa. Now Dave O'Brien. For once, I am actually thankful that I have to put up with Sarge for 3 innings....
ReplyDeletePhils started the game by exploding on offense with a Victorino triple, an Utley double, and a Howard triple off of Jeff Samardzija. Phils lead 2-0 as Pedro gets set to take the mound at Wrigley. The Phils got as many hits in that one inning (3) as they did in 12 innings of last night's win.
ReplyDeleteI'm liking Pedro Martinez thus far.
ReplyDeleteAnd the Pedro porthole (TM) has arrived in Philly.
ReplyDelete8-1 Phillies as this one is quickly turning into a laugher.
ReplyDelete13 batters in an inning. Holy cow. This is just a good ol' fashioned beat down.
ReplyDeleteI know that 49er16 was a bit miffed when I had my rant about how Philly sports were not worser than some other team's sports fans and I coincidentally pointed to a bunch of instances in California.
ReplyDeleteWell, here's reason #672 why Philly fans are not worse than any others and it came in this game. As Victorino was about to grab a deep fly ball near the warning track, a fan threw a full cup of beer on him, thus causing to be a little late on his throw which allowed a base runner to perhaps unfairly make it from 2nd to 3rd. The runner stayed there and it probably would have been a close play if no beer (Martinez would get out of the inning without that runner scoring so no harm, no foul as far as that one goes), but good grief, that was blatant. I'll find the video on YouTube shortly.
As for the fan, the guards initially took the wrong person away, but I guess after some discussion (and possibly viewing the tape, which clearly points out said beer thrower), the guards went back down and tried to escort the real beer thrower away. But despite being clearly guilty per the replay, he still denied it so the guards escorted away the whole front row and who knows what happened from there. Too funny.
I loved that Cubs fan throwing beer on Victorino. That was for Pablo.
ReplyDeleteHe may have got beer poured on him, but there was no harm or no foul done because of it. There were 2 outs after that catch and Martinez got the next guy out to end the inning and prevent the guy who may or may not have reached 3rd because of the beer and subsequent delayed throw.
ReplyDeleteThe best part about that was the whole row being ejected because no one would confess to it. Priceless. If I were there, I would sell the guy out in a heartbeat. But that's just dorky me.
