The Detroit Lions Have Gone From Being Like Dating Whoopi Goldberg To Being Like Terrorists In Amsterdam

Believe it or not, as bad as Chris Myers is as a sideline reporter, when it comes to doing play-by-play, he is even worse. And while he has already proven himself a master of the bad on-air zinger, yesterday, he even took that honor to another level never seen before. Listen in disbelief as he compares the Lions defensive line to terrorists in Amsterdam! I kid you not.

Well then! That was, um, uncomfortable to listen to.

Like I said numerous times, I'm not in the business of calling for a job over one bad joke, but I think Myers' entire body of work this year may just warrant a pink slip from the booth, signaling a not so sad end to an awful career in play-by-play announcing.

While this probably is not the spot to offer commentary on airline security, like I've said before I have traveled all over the world and that includes one time catching a connecting flight in Amsterdam earlier this decade (a few years after 9/11, IIRC). The ironic part about it is the security we faced there was the toughest and most stingiest that I can ever recall. They had one person ask us at least 10 questions about who we were, where we were, what were we doing there, and where are we going on top of all of the other security stuff that you normally see at airports post-9/11. I don't know what happened in the case of the failed Christmas attack and I am not suggesting anything, but iot is kind or ironic that the security that I always thought was some of the best in the world, be the security that nearly allows the next terrorist attack on this country.

But alas, I shall end this post by saying that Chris Myers, you sir, are an idiot.

Chris Myers raises terrorist joke alert level to red (Deadspin)

  1. Chris Myers sucks.

Now, NBC, can we please end this fiction that people want to watch the Flyers. Nationally the Winter Classic got a 2.6, down 10% from 09. Even people in Philly preferred Penn State. From Yahoo:

"Penn State won the big battle on New Year's Day as its victory over LSU in the Capital One Bowl earned a 10 rating/19 share for 6ABC. The Mummers Parade on myPHL17 strutted to second place with a 6 rating/12 share, and the Winter Classic featuring the Flyers was third with a 6 rating/11 share."

    Free the Caps

  2. And what's going to get higher ratings in any U.S. town? The local popular college football game playing in a large post-season national TV game or the local hockey game playing a game outside if the 2 are on at the same time?

Now, NBC, can we please end this fiction that people want to watch the Flyers

When the game was scheduled, no one knew that Penn State would be in a New Years bowl game. And no one knew that that bowl game would turn out to be a close bowl game and a close victory for Penn State. But now wait a minute, take into consideration that Penn State had a bowl game, the Mummers Parade was on, and the Flyers had a Winter Classic at the same time. And then take into consideration this little fact that you conveniently left you that this year's Winter Classic was the 2nd most watched regular season hockey game since 1996! And it's just like you said that Penn State did score higher then the Flyers. And to add on to that, neither the Flyers nor the Bruins have the single star and household name like the Capitals do with Ovechkin and the Penguins do with Crosby. So let's reset, Mummers Parade, Penn State, and Flyers on at same time, more people in Philly watch Penn State than the Flyers, no big household names in the game, and yet, it still was the 2nd most watched regular season NHL game since 1996??? I'd say that a lot of other people outside of Philadelphia and Boston had interest in this game. In other words, what you believe is a fantasy of NBC, may just be reality.

  3. It was the 2nd most watched hockey game because the game got a 14 rating in Boston. I'm also going to make the assumption the game killed in the NE and probably tanked in the other regions. The whole argument advanced for the Flyers(at the time) was that they were more popular than any of the other potential teams. Frankly, the whole problem with selecting those 2 teams is that they both are middle of the road squads. In other words, maybe the NHL needs to market stars instead of teams?

However, I'll concede that Penn State falling to the Cap One bowl instead of the BCS was a kick in the teeth, but JC correctly called the Mummers parade would cut into the game's viewership.

  4. MYERS- First of all, I caught flak before for you ripping announcers but this is "WHAT ARE THEY DOING" stuff w/ Chris Myers. Can you stop trying to be a comedian, you're awful!

NHL- Let's try Caps/Rangers at the Meadowlands next year. Neither city has a big college football presence and/or team expected to play on New Year's Day.

They can't try to go into PA or MI for a while (barring Caps/Pens), ABC puts a Big Ten school from said area in the Cap One Bowl every stinking year.

  5. @ Al: Like I said before, I was not ripping you, but ripping the troll who posted shortly after you and whose comments have now been deleted.

And the funny part about Myers is that he paused for a second or 2 and then said it. Surely the thought came to his mind that making a terrorism joke on the air is never a good thing, right?

I will concede the fact that I think we will see the Caps in the Meadowlands next year against the Giants. However, I would look for a Flyers-Pens Winter Classic in the upcoming year...

  6. considering the time it takes to build a rink and get the ice right in an outdoor setting, i think you'll see a NYC game at Skankee Stadium or Shitty Field before you see the Meadowlands used...
