2010 Winter Olympics Day 7 Men's Ice Hockey Open Thread

Group A: United States vs. Norway 3:00 (USA - Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk, ItG: Pierre McGuire)
Group A: Switzerland vs. Canada 7:30 (CNBC - Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk)
Group B: Slovakia vs. Russia 12:00 AM (CNBC - Kenny Albert and Joe Micheletti)

USA, Canada, and Russia are all in action again today and once again, the most compelling game is in late night. But the big question of the night has to be: will NBC improve their hockey coverage or will the incompetent and irrational morons at NBC once again prevent us from seeing a 1st period of hockey at 7:30 PM ET?

  1. Oh fun, an early test! Curling on USA Network is in extra ends!

If NBC does not put up the USA game on another channel.....

    ReplyDelete
  2. They would have to put the game on CNBC or MSNBC, right?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Just a reminder if you have not already done so to check out the Broad Street Hockey radio podcast for the interview with Mike Boone, the Montreal Gazette columnist who compared the Flyers to the Nazis at the 1936 Olympic games, and his subsequent "confrontation" with yours truly consisting of him listening to and responding to a pre-recorded question from yours truly.

  4. @ 49er16: They don't have it up yet.

    I can't believe these idiots. I really can't.

    ReplyDelete
  5. THEY GO TO A COMMERCIAL BEFORE PUTTING THE GAMES ON!!! THIS!!!!!! IS!!!!! AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. We only missed 2 minutes of the game! NBC's so kind to us!

    Goal for Kessel!

    ReplyDelete
  7. You see that assist by Pavelski?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Nice goal all the way around.

It would have been that much better though if Bobby Ryan would have been more involved. He's the closest thing we got to a Flyer on Team USA.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Did I mis hear or did Doc just say “Kristian Tollefsen” and not “Ole-Kristian Tollefsen”. And he mispronounced Tollefsen. Again.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Score Drury! 2-0 USA!

This one has a chance at topping the Canadian women's 18-0 win....

    ReplyDelete
  11. @JFein your boy OKT almost knocked that one in...

    ReplyDelete
  12. Could somebody please give Mike Emrick a clue on the correct pronunciation of "Ole-Kristian Tollefsen"?

    Thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
  13. @ kt: Frankly I am amazed he did not get hurt while trying to make a play.

The day OKT scores a goal in the Olympics will be the day the world ends.

    *palmslap*

    ReplyDelete
  15. @JFein 3:36pm if OKT scored, wouldn't we need to have Dan Dierdorf brought in to call it?

"Take me now Lord!...I've seen it all."

    ReplyDelete
  16. "Norway is 3-11-1 in the last 3 olympics. They beat Italy and Norway and upset Switzerland." - Mike Milbury

Tell me I am not the only one that heard that. Norway beat Norway in the Olympics!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Milbury: "this is a Norwegian team that is 3-6-1 in the last 3 Olympics. they beat Italy, NORWAY, and upset Switzerland."

    This is an expert analyst?

    ReplyDelete
  18. NBC needs to dump Millbury and just keep Roenick.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @ kt: How can you not remember that game?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Not liking Milbury at the moment? This video will put a smile on your face!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI38ix9zhWo

    Cotdamn I love JR.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @JFein i'll admit to being worried if you remembered that game...

    ReplyDelete
  22. @ kt: Frankly I am concerned that you DON'T remember that epic Norway vs. Norway showdown.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Kane beat that Norway goaltender like a Buffalo cabbie.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Torts must have the USA team playing with extreme honor...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Norway on the board!

    totally Torts' fault

    ReplyDelete
  26. "My favorite was Killer Kowalski." - Pierre McGuire in a conversation with him, Doc, and Edzo that lowered the IQ of everyone that has ever watched professional wrestling.

    Short-handed goal for Norway? Really?

    ReplyDelete
  27. First comment is not a good one, BAD shorthanded goal allowed as Langenbrunner falls down.

    ReplyDelete
  28. maybe you should show yourself out now, Al...;-)

and how are those Wizards looking? gotten in line for playoff tickets yet?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Norway misses another chance high...can we play some defense?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Take it for what it's worth, but according to Wikipedia, Norway did not even win a game in their last 2 Olympics.

I guess that's how you beat yourself...

    ReplyDelete
  31. @kt That's -1000 from your usermame for the Wizards comment.

BTW, I can't believe Jamison was traded to the CAVS, of all teams. They're like the Penguins in my level of hatred.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh, apparently he said last 3 Olympics.

/Checks Wikipedia to see if still accurate.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Miller w/ a big-time save to keep it 3-1.

    ReplyDelete
  34. According to Wikipedia, Norway is 3-16-1 in their last 3 Olympics combined with this one.

They beat Italy, Switzerland, and Austria.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The tie was also against Austria.

Norway beat Norway. What a dolt.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Miller using his head nicely there on that save. 3-1 U.S. after 2 periods.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @JFein good research. i wasn't really paying attention to Milbury until he broke out the 2nd half of that gem

@Al i'm not going to threadjack this with my thoughts about the Wizards and their former owner.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lindsey Vonn crashed in the super-combined. No gold for her.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Milbury with an actual decent point explaining the mistake on the goal. Langenbrunner slipped but Parise stopped skating hard and allowed Norway to rush in.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @SSR no need to watch tonight! thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I was not paying attention.....did Milbury say anything else overtly stupid?

    /Norway beat Norway'd

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wikipedia vandalism claims another victim: John Shuster.

The Highlights: "Nicknamed 'The Largest Choke Artist Alive'"

"He is known for folding under pressure situations and never making clutch, let alone easy, shots."

"In a side note, in 2008 Shuster attempted to commit suicide. Unsurprisingly to those who know him and have watched him play, he failed at the attempt."

    ReplyDelete
  43. "He's wearing a full fellatio." - Pierre McGuire

I could not even tell you non-sexual idea he poorly tried to convey.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @JFein if he won the US curling trials, my buddy and I might have to find 2 other people and take a run at 2014...

    ReplyDelete
  45. Message to Mike Emrick: The name of Patrick Thoresen is pronounced THOResen, not TOUResen.

Quit trying to sound so damn sophisticated and learn the actual pronunciation of these players names!

    ReplyDelete
  46. @SSR Thanks for the spoiler. I guess I'm not watching skiing tonight. /sarcasm'd

BTW, the U.S. defense is still having issues. Norway nearly made it a one-goal game on a couple of occasions.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Doc, Edzo, and Pieere have been worse than their usual awful this game.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ryan Malone scores on the Jack Johnson rebound! 4-1 U.S. and that should clinch this game.

    ReplyDelete
  49. the USA is going to get destroyed Sunday night...so I look forward to entertaining everyone with 'Sunday Night Hoops' quotes

    ReplyDelete
  50. @ kt: Quotes from these nimrods are right up there with Brando.

    ReplyDelete
  51. 5-1 USA. Rafalski

    USA USA USA USA USA

    ReplyDelete
  52. "Pierre, you talked about the escapability of Parise." - Edzo

*Bangs head on desk until thoroughly concussed*

    ReplyDelete
  53. @JFein i might not want to match stupid against stupid Sunday. there's a chance my TV might spontaneously combust.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Scary fact: This game was closer than the 5-1 score indicates.

Canada's kicking our roody poo you-know-whats next week.

Was that Rafalski again? 6-1 USA.

That does not change the fact that Canada will make us look like Team Brazil this Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  55. all right, i'm leaving the office. see everyone late night for the Caps...i mean Russians

    ReplyDelete
  56. I've got library research to do. See you all back for the start of Countdown with Keith Olbermann and the end of some random curling match, er, I mean Canada vs. Switzerland on CNBC!

    ReplyDelete
  57. The defense has to get better for the Canada game. Ryan Miller is a good goalie but they better not hang him out to dry.

    ReplyDelete
  58. i do hope y'all saw Chris Matthews on 'Celebrity Jeopardy' tonight. Who knew the Chris Matthews Journalism scholarship counted as a charity?

and Brent Celek's Captain Morgan TD pose was one of the clues...

    ReplyDelete
  59. Sigh NBC......once again we miss the start of the hockey game.

Curling on CNBC. a 5-0 women's blowout on MSNBC.

My gosh these people are morons.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Am I the only one that thinks that Team USA would be better off having the women play for them Sunday against Canada?

    ReplyDelete
  61. you've got something against curling? I think I'm in love with the captain of the Denmark women's team...

    ReplyDelete
  62. Wow. The Swiss have the edge thus far.

    /Following PUck Daddy live chats
//Good deal of Puck Daddy seems to think the same.

And am I the only one that thinks these teams uniforms look the exact opposite from the game view?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Heatley with a car crash goal to give the Canadians the lead...

    Oh that's mean.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Dany Heatley on the PP...the rout is on

    ReplyDelete
  65. This game will likely end 4 or 5 to 1 in favor of Canada.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Doc is barely trying.

It's constantly "THERE'S A DRIVE!" "ANOTHER TRY!" or something like that. Does he know who is on the ice?

    ReplyDelete
  67. @ SSR: No. He does not.

    /Patrick TOUResen'd

    ReplyDelete
  68. Why can't Fred Roggin EVER look at the right camera?

Oh look they bungled the hockey AGAIN!

    ReplyDelete
  69. @SSR because Fred Roggin thinks he's better than hosting curling?

    ReplyDelete
  70. They leave MSNBC for Olbermann and CNBC goes to commercial before resuming the game.

    Ugh. Just ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Oh fun a fire drill.

    It's cold outside.

    ReplyDelete
  72. It's hard to blame Olbermann for this.

NBC is responsible for at least getting this right the 3rd time.

    ReplyDelete
  73. @JFein there's always the chance NBC could blow off the Canada/USA game for a Lockup marathon...

    ReplyDelete
  74. wow..only 1-0 at the intermission

    ReplyDelete
  75. The Vampires of Switzerland

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wX1ZPYKCZBE

Not as good as the Latvian Pirates singing Wolves of the Sea, but not bad.

    ReplyDelete
  76. @ SSR: At least today was not as bad as yesterday when curling went into extra ends on CNBC and Olbermann started at 8 on MSNBC.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Keith's happy. Marleau scores and it's 2-0 Canada.

    ReplyDelete
  78. "Okay, so they did it. Now what?" - Doc Emrick

    ReplyDelete
  79. I'm going out for a bit. I'll probably be back in time for the big Russia-Slovakia showdown.

    ReplyDelete
  80. CNBC missed the goal from Switzerland.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Alright, I went away to do some chores, eat dinner, and missed the ending.

Canada won 3-2 in a shootout over Switzerland, Crosby scored the go-ahead goal and then Brodeur made a save to clinch the win.

    ReplyDelete
  82. How unlucky am I? Really?

At 2-0 I leave to go and hang out with some friends figuring Canada had it in control, and what do you know, we finally have a thriller.

    Just my luck.

    ReplyDelete
  83. At least I saw a good movie though......

    ReplyDelete
  84. I'm watching parts of the game on the announcer-less NBCOlympics stream and I have but one conclusion: Jonas Hiller is a man-eating beast.

If I had to pick my favorite team in the Western Conference it would probably be the Ducks: Jonas Hiller, Bobby Ryan, formerly Chris Pronger, Hiller, Joffrey Lupul, did I mention how awesome Jonas Hiller is?

    ReplyDelete
  85. @JFein It could've been worse, you could've been me. I was spilt 50-50on watching the game and doing things for my mom and sister the last 2 days.

After seeing some of Team U.S.A.'s game and reading you guys ripping on NBC, especially Doc (BTW, fair criticism) who's my hockey broadcasting idol, I was sensitive.

It's a wimpy habit I have if I feel strongly about something and others don't, it goes back to grade school. There's also other personal things in my life beyond sports that are bugging me

I didn't go back to the CAN/SUI game or come here after I ate.

I only know what happened since I had regular NBC on my bedroom TV muted for some reason and they showed the highlights.

    ReplyDelete
  86. @JFein You liking the Ducks isn't going to sit well w/ 49er16, the Sharks fan if he reads that! /Sarcasm'd

    ReplyDelete
  87. I'll be back and I will be here for the Slovakia-Russia game.

And seeing as it's been too long since I've said it....NBC sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  88. @ Al: I know.

But the Sharks lost me when JR retired and they lost Boucher as their back-up.

He played decent here during an offensive cold-streak and is now the odd man out. Lavi has not played him in months.

    ReplyDelete
  89. wait a second... i missed a shootout?

figures i'd give up on the best game on the tournament so far...

    but it was worth it

    ReplyDelete
  90. from Alexander Semin at the Olympics...:"Cafeteria food stinks. Borrowed golf cart again and took Feds and Kozlov to Denny's. Seniors get a free Grand Slam after 8 p.m."

    ReplyDelete
  91. I'm disappointeed in Alex. Denny's over McDonald's? Anyway, I love the "borrowed golf cart", needs to get one for himself. Scratch that, I need a snowplow.

    ReplyDelete
  92. disappointed* /Spellcheck'd and sleep deprived

    ReplyDelete
  93. looks like i'm going to have to find a stream to watch the start like the other night....

    ReplyDelete
  94. Useless info department: ESPN980 is airing Westwood One's Olympic radio coverage. WW1 is playing figure skating, the men's long program. As Verne Lundquist would say, "WHAT ARE THEY DOING?????"

    ReplyDelete
  95. Go Russia! Crush Slovakia! For the sake of the Latvian Pirates!

    ReplyDelete
  96. @Al i watched the start Tuesday night in Russian

    ReplyDelete
  97. @ kt: If you try that site, just be warned it's announcerless.

    ReplyDelete
  98. are you telling me NBC couldn't have picked up some of the CBC announcers to do hockey. they had to go with 2 Rangers announcers?

    ReplyDelete
  99. Hope you guys have fun, I really need some sleep. I've been up since 3 AM yesterday.

Let's go Russia! Let's go Sleep!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Palffy just missed a wide open net

    ReplyDelete
  101. Can't these Commie-puke Russians do anything right? They are supposed to blowout Slovakia yet it's scoreless and they have hardly looked like the better team.

    ReplyDelete
  102. @ kt: I can't stand him either and yes, NBC did need to go with 2 Rangers announcers.

Kenny Albert....the man who beat out Gary Thorne!

    ReplyDelete
  103. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  104. @JFein fear not for Gary Thorne...he's in Sarasota getting ready for 6 fun months of O's baseball. so he's not really free for Olympics hockey ;-)

on the plus side, Kenny did beat out Joe Beninati

    ReplyDelete
  105. did Johnny Weir really get robbed tonight in figure skating?

    0-0 end of 1

Slovakia really should have gotten a couple of goals

    ReplyDelete
  106. @ kt: Yeah, I guess that is a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  107. wow..Slovakia blew the 2 on 1 shortie opportunity

    ReplyDelete
  108. I've never been so happy to see Russia score.

    ReplyDelete
  109. "He's playing hard this year." - Joe Micheletti

    ReplyDelete
  110. I miss Branko Radivojecic on the Flyers.

    ReplyDelete
  111. @JFein frankly, i thought you'd fallen asleep...

and is it wrong to hope NBC misses a goal when they run a commercial?

    ReplyDelete
  112. by my count, Slovakia could easily have 5 goals. and they're still stuck on 0

    ReplyDelete
  113. Nope, kt, I'm still here, I'm just doing other things while watching this game.

    ReplyDelete
  114. "He's hard on Slovakians" Kenny Albert

    ReplyDelete
  115. 1-0 Russia end 2

and the Kenny Albert comment at 1:14 would have been far funnier if Joe Beninati had said it

    ReplyDelete
  116. Holy Shit! NBC is actually back for a opening period faceoff!

Slovakia has a huge chance now

    ReplyDelete
  117. this is a threadjack, but Gary Thorne has re-upped with MASN for 5 more years.

i suppose now is the time to commence laughing

    ReplyDelete
  118. @ kt: Poor Gary. Why on earth would he agree to torture? :-(

The man is clearly very depressed.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Have I ever mentioned that Joe Micheletti is a delusional dolt?

    ReplyDelete
  120. @JFein it's not like ESPN will be getting the NHL back anytime soon. besides i think he has a mancrush on Jim Palmer. As to Micheletti, can't he at least be an interesting delusional dolt?

    ReplyDelete
  121. Tie game! Marion Hossa!

Now if only his 10 times cooler brother would have scored.

    ReplyDelete
  122. wow...Kenny Albert has a pulse. i was worried about him for awhile

    ReplyDelete
  123. end to end action at the end of the 3rd period!

    ReplyDelete
  124. Bryzgalov denies Chara at the net!

    ReplyDelete
  125. I have to get up at 7 AM.....the longer this game the deader I will be tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Slovakia is going to go 1st

    Stumple

    ReplyDelete
  127. Stumpel first for Slovakia....Goal!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Here's Ovechkin......GOAL!

    1-1 after 2 rounds

    ReplyDelete
  129. Bryzgalov denies The Lesser Hossa Brother!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  132. OVIE LOSES THE PUCK! CHANCE FOR SLOVAKIA TO WIN IT!

    HALAK WITH THE SAVE!!!!

this really could be Crosby's night.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Oh dear god no Gaborik.....

SAVE BRYZGALOV! Thank goodness. Micheletti would have set off fireworks in his pants if that went int.

    ReplyDelete
  136. What the heck was that, Malkin?

    Oy ve.

Chance for Slovakia again to win it.

    ReplyDelete
  137. DEMETRIA...SLOVAKIA WINS ITS IN!!!!! WOW!!!

    ReplyDelete
  138. Dimitra for the win........GAME OVER!

    ReplyDelete
  139. 7 rounds of action and on a night that saw the Top 3 go from bad to worse to worst, it ends with a dog tired Slovakia team upsetting the Russians.

    ReplyDelete
  140. not Ovie's finest hour, but i'm happy for Slovakia. they deserved to win.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I'm tired and have to get up early. Open thread will be up tomorrow though I am going home and I may miss the start of the first game.

    ReplyDelete
  142. @ kt: I'm just glad Gaborik did not get the game-winner.

A mess would have been made in Micheletti's pants had that happened.
