Brad Nessler Channels His Inner Pam Ward

We all know Pammy and her horrible ineptness in of never knowing what the situation is in a game. Well, last Saturday during the Kentucky-Vanderbilt game, Brad Nessler made a mistake that Pam Ward would have been proud of.

Down by 2, Vandy got off a last second shot at the buzzer. Despite the fact that it was a 2-point shot, Brad Nessler did not exactly see it that way.

"Ogleby for the win.....missed it!" - Brad Nessler on a shot that would have TIED the game.

In fairness to him, Brad Nessler did correct himself afterward, however, in a situation where there is 2.5 seconds left in a 2-point game, it is absolutely imperative that an announcer has a fundamental grasp of basic mathematics and rules of basketball as botching a game-winning call like that can be quite unforgivable in some broadcasting circles.

  2. Nessler makes these kinds of mistakes all of the time. Why do people give him a pass, but they want to put Mike Patrick in the old folks home?

  3. @ kt: I'm not one of them.

Nessler is slowly regressing into said old folks home at the same rate that Patrick is.

  4. @JFein I think I was a little harsh on Nessler. If I worked with Vitale and that fool Jimmy Dykes all of the time, I'd probably be going slowly insane as well.

  6. Nessler's zenith was when he was with a non-brainwashed Gary Danielsen in the mid-90s on ESPN. That experience as the ill-fated PbP lead for ABC's NBA coverage in 2003 really changed opinions on him. I still like Nessler, but I'm not going to vehemently defend him.

@kt: Don't forget the Nessler/Griese/Maguire combo in the pantheon of terrible.

  7. @RJBO I'll start by saying I remember Nessler doing Raycom/JP ACC games in the late 80's with Dan Bonner. Here's a famous example of his ACC work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLgeRVj10VM

I definitely ascribe Nessler's decline to working those 2 years with Magurie and Griese. He tried to get too cute keeping up with those guys. I also never had a problem with Nessler's NBA announcing. He just looked bad coming immediately after Marv.

  8. Nessler also had the misfortune of calling the Spurs-Nets NBA Finals. He was still more comfortable & excitable than Al Michaels ever was. Bleh.
