2010 Winter Olympics Day 9 Men's Ice Hockey Open Thread

Group A: Norway vs. Switzerland 3:00 (MSNBC - Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk, SR: Pierre McGuire)
Group B: Latvia vs. Slovakia 7:30 (MSNBC - Kenny Albert and Joe Micheletti)
Group C: Germany vs. Belarus 12:00 AM (MSNBC - Kenny Albert and Joe Micheletti)

Here are the standings thus far from 1-12 (points are next to the team; goal differential where needed is the number in parentheses).

Finland - 6 (+9)
United States - 6 (+7)
Czech Republic - 6 (+5)
Sweden - 6 (+4)
Canada - 5
Russia - 4
Slovakia - 2
Switzerland - 1
Belarus - 0 (-6)
Germany - 0 (-7)
Latvia - 0 (-9)
Norway - 0 (-13)

Thus if there were not to be a 3rd round of games, the schedule for the elimination would look like this:

Finland, United States, Czech Republic, and Sweden all get byes to the quarterfinals.

In the secondary round quarterfinal qualification games to be held on Tuesday February 23, Canada would play Norway, Russia would play Latvia, Slovakia would play Germany, and Switzerland would battle Belarus.

But as we all know there is a 3rd round with today being the real seedings placer for the lesser teams and tomorrow being the big rivalry day that could give us a few shake-ups in the standings. It should be a fun couple days of hockey especially seeing as once again, Latvia is going to be featured in primetime against Slovakia.

  1. Swiss already up 1-0 on the Norwegians.

  3. This has not been a bad game thus far.

  4. 2-1 Norway! Mads Hanson with the goal.

Team Switzerland: The only team that can take Canada to overtime but be losing to Norway in the 2nd period.

This is not good for Latvia.

  5. Goal for Switzerland!!! Roman Wick!! We are tied at 2!

  7. Vikingstad scores again for Norway.

This crazy game is now tied at 3.

And that's the score at the end of the 2nd.

  8. Agreed, SSR. I had about 0 expectations for this game but it's been one of the funnest thus far in the tournament.

  9. Wow, first game of the tournament where both teams scored 3 or more goals.

"He looked like he was either going to committ suicide or block a shot, I'm not sure which." - Mike Milbury analyzing a Norwegian goal and noticing a guy who had bad form while blocking a shot.

  10. And why on earth is the Russia-Czech Republic game on NBC but USA-Canada on MSNBC?

Oh wait. Ice dancing is on and NBC must put it on their main channel for all the women in the world too lazy to turn on MSNBC if they were to put ice dancing on cable.

  11. If Latvia wins, then this game going to OT could be a very good thing for them.

  12. WOW WHAT A PP GOAL! 4-3 SWITZERLAND!

  15. Bad news for Latvia: They are now in last place regardless of the conclusion of this game.

But damn, this has been one exciting game.

  16. SCORE SWITZERLAND!!!! THEY WIN IT IN OVERTIME!

  18. Is it too much to ask for Latvia to start better?

    2-0 Slovakia. Ugh.

  19. I seriously think that MSNBC will receive their highest rating ever this Sunday for the USA-Canada game.

As for Latvia, I can't believe my boys are losing 3-0 again after 1. They are so shy when it comes to shooting the puck. Just let it go. You never know what may happen.

  20. This game is now 5-0 and even though my boys are beginning to show some effort, Slovakia and Halak have been overwhelming this game.

And now barring an 8-goal blowout in the last game, the tournament favorites will begin the elimination round in last place.

It is clear that their statement to the refs who have robbed them of their talent in the 1st 2 games is to rob the whole world of their potential by laying an egg against Slovakia.

  21. Updated standings:

    Finland - 6 (+9)
    United States - 6 (+7)
    Czech Republic - 6 (+5)
    Sweden - 6 (+4)
    Canada - 5 (+9)
    Slovakia -5 (+5)
    Russia - 4
    Switzerland - 2 (-2)
    Norway - 1
    Belarus - 0 (-6)
    Germany - 0 (-7)
    Latvia - 0 (-15)

Canada plays Latvia, Slovakia plays Germany, Russia plays Belarus, Switzerland is still re-matching Norway.

Of course there are 4 games left and anything can happen.

  22. Joe Micheletti in that white t-shirt greatly disturbs me for some reason

    ReplyDelete
  23. Joe Micheletti disturbs me, period.

Ex-Flyer Dennis Seidenberg to the 1st goal for Germany and now they need to score 8 more without letting up a Belarus goal to get Latvia out of last place.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Score Belarus. It is tied at 1 now and now Belarus must win by 8 for the sake of Latvia.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Off the post!

The other way through Koval's legs but the refs blow it dead! THey lost the puck and it was really loose in the crease! Wow what action!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Entertaining 1st period, though Latvia's chances of moving up out of last place as just gone down to slimmer than slim to none.

Here's hoping for a 9 or 10 goal blowout in the last 40 minutes!

  27. BTW, thanks to the "female dominated" douchenozzle thinking of NBC, USA-Canada restricted to MSNBC tomorrow (2/21). NHL embarrassed, should not talk with J. Pierpont Comcast EVER on future extensions.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @ JC: I know.

On the plus side for MSNBC, MSNBC will get to air all their advertisements in front of possibly a record MSNBC audience. I've seen a lot of Matthews, Chuck Todd (I have a mancrush on Chuck Todd, btw), and Ed Schulz commercials (strangely enough, not a lot of Countdown commercials from what I've seen I have no explanations for that)

While it sucks for the few who still don't have cable, FrankD of Pensburgh found this interesting bit of information from Phil Rosenthal of the Chicago Tribune: "But Christopher McCloskey, an NBC Universal Sports and Olympics vice president, said one benefit of putting the hockey game on MSNBC is that it can run there without being cut up into segments to accommodate other sports as NBC customarily does in prime time to cover as much ground and as many viewer interests as possible."

Yeah I would not really want my hockey cut up into segments and parts of the game missed because of the required ice dancing updates. At least on MSNBC, we will get the game in it' entirety.

Of course that point itself brings up several problems such as are there going to be updates for the gold medal game (I believe tomorrow's Czech Republic-Russia day time game is different), why can't they move ice dancing and other normal network primetime coverage to MSNBC, and how could NBC live with themselves if they miss a Crosby goal just for the sake of Bob Costas giving us an update on ice dancing?

    ReplyDelete
  29. The record audience for MSNBC that I can find is 5.9 million for election night 2008. I will be shocked if the USA/Canada game does better than that. There is a reason NBC isn't blowing 1/2 of primetime for this game. If I'm wrong, well, feel free to mock me for the rest of the year.

And I know you're ragging on ice dancing, but apparently the US actually has a shot at a medal this time. Though, with it being ice skating, they could skate the best and end up finishing 8th.

    /not a sport'd

  30. Live blog tomorrow for USA and Canada.

Tomorrow will also be the last day that you see the old CiL layout...for now at least.

I've been experimenting with a new layout that personally I like, but I want your opinions as well and I will use the elimination round of the Olympics as a trial round for the new format.

  31. Why is "Tick Tick Boom" by The Hives still playing on my TV screen?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Was I the only one that noticed at the beginning of the broadcast how overweight Kenny Albert looked?

  33. Sergei Kostitsyn scores! Belarus leads it 3-1!

John Tripp comes right back and scores one for Germany! 3-2 now!

All this fight just to be able to play Switzerland on Tuesday.

    ReplyDelete
  34. HOLY CRAP! MARCEL GOC!! DOWN 3-1 HARDLY A MINUTE AGO, GERMANY HAS TIED THE GAME AT 3!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Salei fires AND SCORES ON THE POWER PLAY! BELARUS TAKES THE LEAD BACK, 4-3!

    ReplyDelete
  36. That's the dagger!! 5-3 Belarus and with just barely over a minute left, it is highly likely they will skate out of here with a win and a date with the Swiss on Tuesday.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Finland - 6 (+9)
    United States - 6 (+7)
    Czech Republic - 6 (+5)
    Sweden - 6 (+4)
    Canada - 5 (+9)
    Slovakia - 5 (+5)
    Russia - 4
    Belarus - 3
    Switzerland - 2
    Norway - 1
    Germany - 0 (-9)
    Latvia - 0 (-15)

As of now, the pairings are Canada-Latvia, Slovakia-Germany, Russia-Norway, Belarus-Switzerland. The only thing to note is that Belarus and Switzerland are locked in their positions and they will face each other on Tuesday, hence the bolding of the pairing.
