2010 Winter Olympics Day 8 Men's Ice Hockey Open Thread
Group C: Belarus vs. Sweden 3:00 (MSNBC - Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk, ItG: Pierre McGuire) Group B: Czech Republic vs. Latvia 7:30 (CNBC - Mike Emrick and Eddie Olczyk) Group C: Finland vs. Germany 12:00 AM (MSNBC)
Edzo making a good point about the competition, games have really picked up the last two days. Underdogs are coming much closer than in the opening games.
@ Al: I sort of disagree with Edzo on that one. The underdogs have been much close yet, but they have been in virtually every game thus far, only they've just been getting results now.
Swiss were within 2 of the U.S.
Norway held Canada scoreless for the 1st period.
Latvia and Russia on the ice was not the same game as the 8-2 score would indicate. They killed 7 of 8 Russian PPs and played a solid game, even scoring a pair on Nabokov.
Finland could not dismantle Belarus.
Germany hung with Sweden.
Czech Republic and Slovakia was a close game all the way around.
U.S. could not put Norway away until late.
And from there we had Switzerland and a SO loss to Canada, Slovakia and a SO win against Russia, and Belarus nearly doing it to the Swedes again.
These "underdog teams" have been together and practicing a lot longer than the big name teams who were still playing NHL games during the Opening Ceremonies. Just as a quick example, 14 of the players on Team Latvia play together on the KHL team Dinamo Riga.
I understand, I guess it's more appropriate to say they're now staying in the game to the final buzzer. Definitely, some one-goal games are being played deep into the 3rd and OT as we get toward the playoff rounds.
@ Al: Nope. No sarcasm needed. Latvia is just that great. With a man among men such as Bartulis,ou can use what to others may seem like hyperbole but what is in actuality the truth.
This blowout is certainly good for Latvia. If I feel like it, I will breakdown the standings and the tie-breakers to see what exactly Latvia needs to happen to get the best seed possible.
Swedes are beating Belarus 2-0. So good to see that 2010 is not 2002.
ReplyDelete2-0 Swedes after 1. I was only able to see the last 5 minutes of the period but during those 5 minutes Belarus did nothing on offense.
ReplyDeleteDid Pierre McGuire just ask Daniel Sedin where the chemistry with his brother Henrik comes from?
ReplyDeleteYou sure that video is rated "Arrrrrrr?"
ReplyDeleteAnd to quote Patrick Starfish from Spongebob Squarepants about his favorite hockey team in "Frankendoodle", he told us it was "FINLAND!"
@JFein's 3:34 comment
ReplyDeleteSame thing for me and Belarus. Sweden can do mostly what they want, outshooting BEL 17-6 after 1.
Refs just blew a bad call, Tallinder should've been penalized for hooking on the Belarus rush.
Franzen tripped up for Sweden, no call. Teams even in bad ref calls.
ReplyDeleteFranzen! 3-0 Sweden.
ReplyDeleteBelarus power play, they score on a scramble in front! 3-1 Sweden. Game on.
ReplyDeleteAlexander Kulakov gets credit for the goal, 3-1. 4:52 left in 2nd period.
ReplyDeleteBelarus is coming on! Shot off Gustavsson's glove!
ReplyDeleteFranzen hooked and held, draws a penalty on Belarus, Sweden PP carries over into the 3rd period. 3-1 Sweden.
ReplyDeleteHow is it that comebacks happen whenever I turn off the game?
ReplyDeleteBelarus kills off the penalty. Still 3-1.
ReplyDeleteOhlund off the post! Henrik Sedin robbed by Mezin!
ReplyDeleteThat would've been the dagger if Swedden scored.
@ JC: Close. That video is just Rated A for Awesome.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap Belarus! It's 3-2.
ReplyDeleteMeleshko scores on the Kukalov rebound! 3-2 Sweden now. 8:00 left.
ReplyDeleteBELARUS HITS THE POST!!!!! SWEDEN IS LEAKING BIG-TIME OIL!!!!
Around 6:00 left in the 3rd. Belarus is turning it on. Where was this team in the 1st and most of the 2nd period?
ReplyDeleteSurely I was not the only one that thought the Swedes would get revenge and completely obliterate Belarus, right?
ReplyDeletePhysical play picking up, 5:00 left.
ReplyDeleteSweden gets a much-needed clear. 2:00 left.
ReplyDeleteAlfredsson scores with 10 secondsl eft and Sweden survives! Wow what a finish!
ReplyDeleteStaas stopped by Gustavsson! Mezin scrambles back in his net!
ReplyDeleteAlfreddson scores in front to ice it for Sweden! That was wild
Edzo making a good point about the competition, games have really picked up the last two days. Underdogs are coming much closer than in the opening games.
ReplyDeleteI may be going out for part of the game, but when I am here, you can expect a lot more comments from me during the Czech Republic-Latvia game.
ReplyDeleteLatvija par zelta medaļu. Lai dzīvo demi-Dievs Oskars Bārtulis!

There are no women's hockey games today so hopefully the scheduling conflicts will be less.
ReplyDeleteI understand, I guess it's more appropriate to say they're now staying in the game to the final buzzer. Definitely, some one-goal games are being played deep into the 3rd and OT as we get toward the playoff rounds.
ReplyDelete45 minutes away from The Great Team Latvia!
ReplyDeleteI'll probably miss the start, but once I get back home, I'll be watching and commenting.
Latvija, lai uzvarētu! Sakaut Čehija!
Bah, stupid family just eating now. Looks like I might end up missing the whole first period of the game. Fuck.
ReplyDeleteGO LATVIA!!!!!!!!!!!
3-0 Czech Republic, 8 minutes in. Latvia got their first shot on goal at 8:49 of the 1st period.
ReplyDeleteCNBC showed the end of the U.S. men's curling match, they won for the first time in the tourney.
NBCOlympics.com stream was up during the delay and is still up.
CNBC has now switched over from curling.
Latvian power play late in the 1st, down 3-0, and they go offsides.
ReplyDeleteLatvian power play goes nowhere.
ReplyDelete1st period over, 3-0 Czech Republic.
Goal scorers for CZE: David Krejci, Tomas Plekanec, and Jaromir Jagr
ReplyDeleteShots on goal: 16-4 Czech Republic
We're losing!!!! This can't be happening!
ReplyDeleteI can only conclude that those damn dirty Czechs poisoned our boys' dinner last night.
ReplyDeleteElias w/ a great pass to Kaberle for a power play goal, 4-0 Czechs.
ReplyDeleteAnd they're on another power play...
@JFein You Latvian now?! /Sarcasm'd
I understand the frustration.
Woot! The dreaded Latvian PK is back, baby! I smell a comeback.
ReplyDeleteCzcehs didn't score on that power play?! There is a god.
ReplyDelete@ Al: I may not be Latvian by blood, however I am undying in my support of Philadelphia Flyer and Latvian demi-god Oskars Bartulis.
ReplyDelete@JFein No sarcasm tag, huh? Latvia has two straight shots on Vokoun, there's a start.
ReplyDeleteVokoun robs Latvia on a 2-on-1.
ReplyDeleteLatvia penalty now, deep trouble for a comeback attempt, hit from behind.
@ Al: Nope. No sarcasm needed. Latvia is just that great. With a man among men such as Bartulis,ou can use what to others may seem like hyperbole but what is in actuality the truth.
ReplyDeleteCzechs with heavy puck possession.
ReplyDeleteJagr robbed! Good news.
Latvia penalty, bad news.
Latvia got a hooking minor and a 10-minute misconduct for shooting the puck out of play.
ReplyDeleteMasalskas just saved it from being 5-0.
Score Latvia! Sotnieks! 4-1. Comeback on.
ReplyDeleteThey just missed high or it would've been 4-2!
ReplyDeleteLATVIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLAT-VI-JA! LAT-VI-JA! LAT-VI-JA!
ReplyDeleteThey are back in the game, 4-2 after 2.
Not only that, but if the game had started when CNBC first hit the air with this game, it would be 2-1 Good Guys.
ReplyDeleteLAT-VI-JA! LAT-VI-JA! LAT-VI-JA!
Latvia has the Czechs right where they want them with this PK to start the period.
ReplyDeletePenalty on the Czech Republic! 10 seconds of 4-on-4 followed by a 1:50 PP for us Good Guys
ReplyDeleteThis has been an intense 3rd period.
ReplyDeleteWell, at least the deadly Latvian PK will end this game.
ReplyDeleteCotdamn it an empty-netter to kill the momentum we gained in that period.
ReplyDeleteWell Slovakia better beware. Latvia will be back with a vengeance
Czech Republic wins it 5-2. Cotdamn it.
ReplyDeleteWell Slovakia tomorrow. Maybe then we will finally see the Latvians strike.
All right Timonen! 2-0 Finland over Germany.

ReplyDeleteTimonen on the power play. 3-0 for the Flying Finns.
ReplyDeletewow. Teemu Selanne is the all time points leader in Olympic play. I would have guessed Peter Forsberg.
ReplyDelete"I don't know what the Swedish word for siesta is." Mike Milbury.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Google it's nap. I feel like something's off there.
huh Harry Watson. 36 goals in the 1924 Olympics. He was tied with Selanne until tonight.
ReplyDeletethe other Ruutu! 4-0 Finland
ReplyDeletePitkanen! 5-nil Finland
ReplyDelete"What can a goalie see through a screen? Nothing." Expert analysis from Joe Micheletti
i think Finland is going to be playing for a medal. they seem really balanced. and Kiprusoff/Backstrom are an underrated goalie tandem.
ReplyDelete2 goals for Timonen as Finland wins 5-0 against Germany.
ReplyDeleteThis blowout is certainly good for Latvia. If I feel like it, I will breakdown the standings and the tie-breakers to see what exactly Latvia needs to happen to get the best seed possible.
