Random Thoughts About Last Night And The End Of The Regular Season

We all know how the Phillies game ended last night, but I am curious as to your thoughts on this. I'll be honest, when Charlie Manual put in Brad Lidge at the end of the game, I was thinking to myself why on earth was he doing it and what the fuck was going on. But now that it has been a day and the more I think about it, the more I come to feel that that was one of the best things that Charlie Manual has done all year. Brad Lidge is currently at a real low point in his career and he had nothing but confidence to be gained. It was 1-pitch, it was a ground ball, and just like that, it was over. And while at that point, the division was technically over, I can tell you that no one knew that the Marlins had won. The scoreboard, according to Franzke and Anderson, had not indicated that that game was final before the last pitch. Surely only later in the night did the Phillies find out they were division champs before Lidge threw his one pitch. But the bottom line is after having a nightmarish year and going from hero to goat in Philly, if for one night only, Brad Lidge was once again embraced, loved, and cheered, and forget mechanics, whether he is closer or not in the post-season, that may be what Brad Lidge needed to get him back to his 2008 form.

Here's a thought: The Los Angeles Dodgers still have not clinched the NL West title. And here's another thought, Rockies, who play the Dodgers in their last series, win out, the Rockies will be NL West champions, after the Dodgers dominated 1st place in the NL West all year.

The Twins have a pulse, if nothing else. They started the series 2-games behind the Tigers and that is where they have ended up afterward. The downside for them now is that instead of 7 games to work with, they only have 3 and are counting on some help from the Chicago White Sox to beat the Twins as they have to play flawless against the Royals, which includes a Saturday meeting with Zach Greinke.

  1. i just talked to my best friend, who thinks the Twins have no chance. i gave him the RJBO analysis, but he's not convinced.

  2. BROOKS LAICH, ON THE POWER PLAY!

  3. If the Twins can sweep the Royals (including beating Greinke) then they might have a chance, especially with RJBO's scenario of a doubleheader and/or a game on Monday comes to life.

  4. I thought the Dodgers already clinched a playoff spot. They're doing their best 2006 Tigers impersonation: Have an insurmountable lead in May & June, only to watch someone take the division the last day of the season.

Alvaro Figaro (who?) is starting Saturday's game against the Good Guys because of Monday's rainout instead of Porcello. I'm just hoping the division is wrapped up so Verlander doesn't have to start Sunday (or Monday). I still have cold sweats over the '04 Cubs Wild Card collapse (thanks, LaTroy!).

  5. The Dodgers have 93 wins, the Braves 86. I realize they're playing the Natinals but making up 7 games while playing 4 will be tough.

and yes, I'm sure the Tigers desperately want to save Verlander for Game 1 v the MFY.

but the Manhorse will crack a couple of homers tomorrow and all will be ok, right ;)

  6. Um the Dodgers already clinched a playoff spot and so did the Rockies.

  7. Never mind about that.....I thought I read somewhere that the Braves and the Dodgers could have a playoff series or something. Whatever.

And the Rockies just got it today. I typed this up without checking today's scores and headlines.

    /Writing an essay due tomorrow.

  8. Even though the Sharks are losing, I still love Mike Emrick calling this game.

  9. The Sharks are beginning their season, the way the Giants finished their's. Very depressing to watch.

  10. Which is also the same way that the Sharks playoff run ended last season!

    Amazing how that works. ;-)

  11. @Keith you loving Mike Emrick meant I had to listen to Joe Beninati...and I thought it being on Versus would allow to miss him.

@JFein do you mind if I use your comments tomorrow to follow the Olympic announcement?

  12. @ kt1000: I don't see why not.

Although you may be doing it in this post as I am not sure if I am going to be putting anything up tomorrow other than my picks.

  13. @ JFein whatever is the most recent post at 11:45 is the one I'll use.

oh and Red Jesus had 2 goals and an assist tonight :)

  14. Here's something to add to your fire JFein. Oregon is thinking about reinstating LeGarrette Blount. I guess his suspension had a clause about reinstatment if Oregon would be competing for a Rose Bowl bid.

  15. I thought Obama was going to impose his will and bring the Olympics to Chicago? Hell Chicago finished dead last in voting.

    /IOC is incredibly corrupt

  16. i don't think you know the IOC if you thought Obama and Oprah were going to sweep in and take it over. and yes it is corrupt.

Rio now wins in a walk...

  17. however, if Madrid does win, than the fix was really in because of Samaranch

  18. still waiting on the announcement from the IOC

  19. From the City of God to the City of the Olympics....

Rio is the host of the 2016 games

  20. Just found out that news.

I don't know if the IOC had their minds made up or not, but I thought Obama's speech to the IOC was horrible and succeeded in winning over a grand total of 0 members and perhaps even lost a few. I don't mind the getting involved, but sheesh, that was a bad speech, in my opinion.

  21. Chicago should've had Tony Dungy speak in Copenhagen. If he could get Vick and LeGarrette Blount reinstated, he could get anything accomplished.

  22. Obama could have given the greatest speech of all time and it wouldn't have mattered, Chicago just did not have a good technical bid.

  24. Congrats to Rio! And not only do they have the 2016 Olympics, but let us not forget that Brazil also host the 2014 World Cup.

  25. Props to the IOC for making Rio the choice and not watching this episode of The Simpsons beforehand.
