Chip Caray Will Have To Take His Fisting Elsewhere

Very very very sad news coming out of Turner Broadcasting today. I'm not sure if there is any other way to tell you this so I will just have to break it to you and hoped you can bare what I have to tell you without breaking down. Chip Caray will no longer be working at TBS.

Wait? You're NOT upset about this??? Via the New York Times

Chip Caray’s tenure as TBS’s lead major league baseball announcer ended Monday when he and the cable network agreed to part ways.

Caray’s high-volume style was mixed with a penchant for bad play calls, embellishments and factual errors. His best known incident occurred during the American League Central Division tie breaker between the Twins and the Tigers in October. He called an obvious lineout this way: “Line drive. Base hit. Caught out there. The runner tags. Throw to the plate. On target. And in time! A double play!”

In a memo sent to company employees, David Levy, the president of Turner Sports, wrote on Monday: “Since the end of this year’s M.L.B. playoffs, we’ve had several discussions with Chip Caray regarding 2010 and beyond. Both sides have agreed that now is the right time for Turner Sports and Chip to move ahead on different paths.”

Caray had some time left on his contract with Turner, where he also called Braves games on the Peachtree TV cable network. Levy said the company was looking at a “number of candidates” to replace Caray at both positions.
One more time with passion.......FISTED!!!!!!!!!!!!

We'll miss you, Chip. And your horrible calls.

For whenever there is a line drive basehit that is caught out there resulting in a double play, we know that your spirit will be in the booth calling it.

Seriously, TBS had to do this and get a replacement. Caray was bad.

  3. @kt: While the solution to Caray may be promoting Orsillo, who will take over Orsillo's LDS series? Tom McCarthy? Fox has tried him out on Saturday games the past couple of years so I could see him getting a TBS playoff series.

  4. I guess I should have made this clearer, but I do agree that that is TBS' best move to promote Orsillo to their lead PbP guy.

I've never heard McCarthy do a game, but I've heard nothing but good things. Gary Cohen would be a good choice too, and I'll admit I'd be curious to hear Kevin Harlan do baseball.

Of course, this probably means that Dick Stockton will replace Caray, leading to an even more fun postseason next year.

  6. McCarthy's not bad. He certainly has pretty big shoes to fill as he took over for the late great Harry Kalas and because of that I think he gets undeservedly compared especially seeing as his style is different from Harry's, but I would not object to seeing him do playoff baseball.

The only real knack on him is that he can be a bit too chatty at times. Occasionally he buys into Chip Caray's motto that when 3 words would suffice, the audience needs to hear 76.

  7. I would take Orsillo or Brian Anderson as replacements for Caray.

I don't think Cohen can do any regular-season TBS games since he works exclusively for SNY.

Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling share analyst duties so that's why Ron could do the TBS Sunday broadcasts.
